How do Google self-driving cars work?

I’ve been reading about Google’s self-driving cars division. I’m intrigued by how this technology might be used in the future, but I don’t really understand it. How does Google make self-driving cars?

While
Tesla
 has pioneered semi-autonomous driving, Google is looking to produce a fleet of non-human, self-driving cars. To get these to work, Google employs a technology called LiDAR.
LiDAR, which stands for light detection and ranging, uses lasers to send light to an object, which then sends the light emission back to the car. Through this method, self-driving cars can instantly sense turns in the road or objects in their path.
The concept is very similar to radar, which uses radio waves, or sonar, which uses sound. It’s just an upgraded version of these other technologies.
