“I’m so sorry to hear that this happened to you—I hope you’re doing okay.
If you need a replacement car key but don’t have the original anymore, you can either get in touch with the dealership or contact a locksmith.
Either way, you will be asked to provide:
  • Your vehicle’s make, model, and year
  • Vehicle identification number
  • Proof of ownership, such as vehicle registration, title, or insurance
  • Whether your car uses a traditional mechanical key, transponder key, or a key fob
If you choose to go the dealership route, you may need to provide less information but the key won’t be delivered to you. You’ll have to retrieve it, which may not be convenient.
By going the locksmith route, you will have to provide more information but they can come to you—usually within a few hours.
The good news is, if you have

, this service may be covered.
If you don’t, now might be the right time to get it.
