How can I become an electric car mechanic?

I’m finally looking into getting my associate degree, and I’ve always really been interested in car repair. With so many people going electric, I think it would be smart to look into being a mechanic for electric vehicles.

The issue is that I’m just not sure where to start! What path should I take to become an electric car mechanic?

Electric car sales
have definitely shot up in the last few years, so that’s a smart career choice! I’m happy to say that you’re on the right track—to become an electric car mechanic, you need to get your associate degree first.
Here’s the path that you should stick to:
  • Get your associate in Automative Technology. If you’re already somewhat familiar with car repair, this part should be pretty simple. A certificate or a degree has been shown to give would-be mechanics the best job prospects, and a focus on hybrid technology will give you the training you need on understanding how an electric car functions.
  • Find entry-level work. This will help you gain hands-on experience out in the world. You may also be assigned to assist a more experienced mechanic, who can be a great resource for any questions you may have.
  • Get industry certified. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers several certifications in alternative fuels, which can boost your ability to find work as well as your reputation. While this step isn’t strictly necessary, it can be a huge benefit in getting work for electric cars specifically.
By following this path in whatever way works best for you, you can easily become an electric car mechanic in just a few years.
