If you want to become a driving instructor in Florida
, you’ll need to be certified by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. You must demonstrate proper qualifications before you can obtain a license from the state.
All driving instructors must have:
A valid Florida driver’s license and be at least 21 years old
A license free of any suspensions or revocations for at least three years prior to their application submission
No prior convictions of felony or misdemeanor within five years
Here’s how to get your Florida driver’s instructor license:
Submit a completed application for an instructor
Have your fingerprints taken using LiveScan
Submit a Certificate of Completion showing you passed a 32-hour Driving Instructor Training Course (DITC) or 8-hour DITC refresher course
You can mail your completed application and supporting documents with the fee to:

All driving instructor licenses are valid for one year and the renewal application must be received a minimum of 45 days before expiry.
