Does renters insurance cover mold?

While cleaning my apartment the other day, I noticed a substantial amount of mold growing in my bathroom. I’m worried it’s not healthy or safe. Will my renters insurance cover the damage?

You’re right that living with a mold infestation can be bad for your health, but it’s your landlord’s responsibility to maintain the building.
Since the mold is in your apartment, your
renters insurance
won’t cover the mold damage.
Renters insurance only covers your personal property and not the actual dwelling or building. The best thing you can do is contact your landlord and explain the situation.
Additionally, if your personal property has mold damage, you’ll want to contact your insurance company. In some instances, you may have coverage under your policy for damage if a
covered peril
caused the mold damage or you have a mold endorsement.
Finally, if you want to ensure you have the right policy and aren’t overpaying for your coverage, you should use
Jerry
. A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even help you cancel your old policy.
