Can you travel in LA without a car?

I’m considering a move to Los Angeles but I don’t have a car. Is public transportation good in LA, or will it be hard for me to get from place to place?

Moving can be incredibly stressful, but we are glad you are doing your research! Unlike some of the other big cities in the U.S.,
Los Angeles
has the reputation of being a place where everyone drives everywhere. This reputation isn’t unearned, as the city is very spread out and the majority of residents have cars.
If you want to live in Los Angeles without a car, you’ll want to pick your location carefully. Some neighborhoods are more spread out than others, and certain areas have more access to public transportation.
Some common ways for people without cars to get around in LA include:
  • Buses
  • Bicycles
  • Ridesharing
If you’re just planning to visit LA for a few days, you’ll be okay without a car. If you plan on living there for a while,
buying a car
is probably a worthwhile investment. Even though it can be expensive, you’ll find that the cost of ridesharing or taking a taxi stacks up quickly.
If you decide to buy a car and find one you like, you’ll need to insure it.
