I have a truck and a trailer and I’m going on a camping trip. My truck only seats five people, but we have seven who want to go. Rather than taking another car, can my friends sit in the trailer while I’m driving?

An additional nine states allow people to travel in a fifth wheel, but only if the fifth wheel has proper safety restraints or seat belts.The 10 states that allow you to sit in a trailer while driving are:
- Arizona
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Maryland
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- North Carolina
If passengers are riding in a trailer while driving in any other state, it may result in a ticket or fine—and potentially derail the beginning of your trip. Although it’s a bit of a hassle, taking a second car is the better solution in terms of legality and safety.
