Can you drive a self-driving car without a license?
I have a new [Tesla](https://getjerry.com/car-insurance/tesla-insurance-cost) with the “summon” feature that lets me call my car to come and get me, but I know they and other car manufacturers are working on fully driverless technologies. If they work, will a person even need a license to ride in a driverless car?

I’m sure we’ve all had those moments when we wished we could just sleep all the way to work, and new driverless technologies are moving us closer to making that a reality every year. Could you drive a
self-driving car
without a license, though? Probably not. And all vehicles that currently possess autonomous features still require licensed drivers to operate them.If we’ve learned nothing else from movies like The Matrix and Terminator it’s that all autonomous vehicles have to have some variety of manual override in case of malfunction—or spontaneous self-awareness. Whoever takes over control needs to know how to operate the vehicle, and that requires a license.
In theory, if we ever get to a point where we have fully autonomous vehicles with no manual override option, we’d imagine the rules may change.
If we ever reach a day when the machines are doing the driving for us, we may not need
