Can the cops pull you over for driving late at night?

Would the cops pull me over just for driving late at night? I prefer to drive at night when I take long trips because there are fewer people on the road, but I always get nervous that I’ll be pulled over if I’m the only car on the road at like 3 a.m. Is it possible to get pulled over for being out late?

Fortunately, it isn’t legal for the cops to pull you over simply for driving at night. In fact, it is illegal for the cops to pull you over at all without probable cause. Without probable cause, you won’t be stopped no matter what hour you’re driving.
However, there are a lot of things that count as probable cause. These include:
  • Broken or burnt out lights
  • Not signaling before changing lanes
  • Driving too quickly or
    too slowly
In short, while you can’t get pulled over for driving late at night, you can get pulled over for abnormal driving behavior.
