Where is the fuel filter on a 2004 Audi A6?

In all cars, no matter the make or model, the fuel filter serves the same purposes: to filter dirt and debris out of your car’s fuel as it goes from your gas tank to the fuel injectors and to make sure fuel is flowing at the correct rate. This keeps your car running smoothly and keeps your fuel injection system from becoming clogged.
Because of its function, all cars are designed with their fuel filter somewhere between the gas tank and the engine. In a 2004 Audi A6, specifically, the fuel filter can be found just in front of and above the passenger rear tire. In order to get to it, you will first have to jack the car up, then remove the belly pan right in front of the tire. The fuel filter will be right above the pan.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

Experts recommend that you replace your fuel filter every two years or 30,000 miles. If you’re wondering if you’re due for a change, be on the lookout for these common signs that your fuel filter might be clogged:
  • Car has difficulty starting
  • You notice odd or loud noises coming from the fuel pump
  • Idling, sputtering, or engine misfires
  • Car stalling
  • Difficulty accelerating
  • Odors from the exhaust
  • Check Engine Light comes on
A fuel filter that needs to be replaced can lead to decreased fuel economy and increased emissions, making it bad for both your wallet and the environment.

2004 Audi A6 fuel filter replacement

Replacing the fuel filter on a 2004 Audi A6 can be done by your mechanic, or you can take a DIY approach. A mechanic will likely get the job done more quickly, though, and the cost even with labor is usually just around $130
To do it yourself, you’ll first need to disable the fuel pump. To do this, turn off the car, then remove the cover on the passenger side trim to get to the fuel box, and remove the 20 amp fuse in the orange panel. Let the car run for around 15 seconds, then turn it off again.
Jack the car up and remove the belly pan in front of the passenger rear tire so that you can see the fuel filter. To remove the old filter, uncouple the two fuel lines at the back, loosen the Torx box that holds the filter in, then remove the final fuel line before popping the old filter out.
When placing the new filter in, hook the fuel lines in, then place the filter into the bracket from which you removed the old filter. Tighten the Torx box to secure it into place. Before replacing the belly pan, run the car for a few minutes to check for any leaks
To find the filter, you can order one online or go to retailers such as Advance Auto Parts or O’Reilly Auto Parts. Typically, fuel filters run around $40.
