Can I mix engine oils?

I have two opened bottles of motor oil in my garage and want to use them up, but one is synthetic and the other is semi-synthetic—can I mix engine oils together?

In theory, you can mix traditional, semi-synthetic, and synthetic oils together without damaging your engine, but you won’t get the same performance features that you normally would from the synthetic.
For this reason, you really shouldn’t ever mix engine oils—be they different brands, weights, etc—unless you have literally no other option.
To prevent situations where you might need to mix engine oils from happening in the first place, regularly check your oil level and always change your oil when it is time to do so—this way, you will always be prepared and have the necessary equipment available should you need to top off your oil.
