Can I undertake driving lessons using my own car?

I’m starting up driving lessons next week, but someone asked if I was planning to use my own car? I didn’t know that was an option! I’d be more comfortable in my own car since it’s the one I’ll be using after I get my license, but I’m not sure whether that’s actually an option. Can I take driving lessons in my own car?

You’d be surprised at how many people don’t know this is an option, whether they drive in the UK or in North America! In North America, the answer is yes, you can take lessons in your own car. In the UK, the answer is yes with a catch.
In the UK, instructors usually give lessons in specially built instructor cars with dual control, so they can retake control of the car if the student is overwhelmed. It’s pretty normal for students to take their driving lessons in these sorts of cars after
getting their permits
. But what if you want to use your own?
It can sometimes depend on who your driving instructor is and what rules they impose. But for the most part, they will permit you to take your lessons in your own car. The only caveat is that your car must fulfill all requirements, which are basically that it must be fully functional and properly maintained.
It’s still advisable to at least start off in an instructor car so that your instructor can retake control if you’re having trouble, at least until you get used to it. But that’s entirely up to you.
If your parents are nervous about you taking driving lessons in your own car (or theirs), tell them to fire up
