Michigan Woman Receives Burns After Setting Her Own Car on Fire to Kill Bed Bugs

A panic attack led a Michigan woman to light her own car on fire after finding bed bugs in the vehicle, Oakland County Sheriff's Office reported on July 29.
In a state of high anxiety triggered by finding the pests, the woman doused her car’s interior with rubbing alcohol and lit it on fire. The flames spread quickly, causing second-degree burns on the woman’s body.
Fox 2 Detroit
says police and firefighters put the fire out and supported the woman.
To add insult to injury, a
comprehensive insurance
policy would’ve covered any damage caused by pests like bed bugs, but because the woman intentionally lit her vehicle on fire, any claim she makes will most likely be denied.
Nobody wants bed bugs, but setting your car on fire is a little extreme.

What does comprehensive coverage cover?

Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your vehicle caused by sources besides a collision with another driver. These sources can include but are not limited to:
  • Contact with animals
  • Fire
  • Natural disasters
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Fallen objects like trees, ice, and projectiles
  • A civil disturbance like a riot
  • Glass damage
If you find insect damage in your vehicle and you have comprehensive coverage, you can make a claim. Your insurance provider will cover the cost to remove, repair, or replace your vehicle, minus your deductible.

How can a comprehensive car insurance claim be denied?

Although comprehensive coverage protects you from a wide variety of damages, it has its boundaries.
If an incident requiring coverage wasn’t reported quickly enough, if it resulted from illegal behavior, or, in the case of the woman’s situation, the incident could’ve clearly been avoided,
Phillips Law
says any claim under a comprehensive insurance policy can be rejected.
Car insurance claims can also be denied if the driver that caused the damage wasn’t listed in the policy or if any injuries resulting from the incident weren’t treated right away.

Should you have comprehensive car insurance?

Even though it has its limitations, adding comprehensive coverage to your
car insurance
policy is a good idea. If you’re still paying for your car through a loan, it’s probably mandatory.
Even if you already paid off your car, you should consider keeping the extra coverage. Comprehensive coverage will protect you from financial loss in a long list of possible scenarios at a relatively low cost.
