background
Mercedes-Benz
is one of the many automakers working to bring their most popular models into the electric age. The EQB Electric, a top-of-the-line large SUV, has a tentative production date starting in late 2022. The Mercedes-Benz EQS, an electrified S-Class sedan, will soon be released with a
range to rival Tesla
.
Now one of the most beloved Benz models is also getting an eco-friendly version.
Mercedes
recently teased the upcoming electric G-Wagen with the EQG concept. Read on for the story behind its development and info on its distinctive features.
The EQG concept is expected to be a 2024 model.

The vision behind the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept

As Mercedes-Benz proudly reiterates, the G-Wagen has been an off-roading icon since its release in 1979.
To stay relevant, it's only natural that the G-Wagen readies itself for the future. This includes getting many of the technological upgrades present in its siblings, plus an all-new electric powertrain.

What will this G-Wagen’s powertrain look like?

According to
Car and Driver
, the EQG will likely have four electric motors, one for each wheel. Each one will also have its own separate controls, optimizing the SUV's performance on both civilized roads and unpaved trails. It's also expected to have a rigid wheel axle and independent front suspension.
Actual power output has yet to be revealed, but it should be just as brawny as the existing G-Class. The most powerful engine, standard on the AMG G63, is a 577-horsepower twin-turbo V8. It's paired with AWD and nine-speed transmission, though we already know the EQG will have a two-speed gearbox.
We also don't know how much range the EQG will have, nor how long it takes to charge. However, Benz did reveal that a charging cable can be stored in the lockable rear box. This box replaces the regular spare wheel housing, but Car and Driver speculates that you'll also be able to carry an extra tire.
While there's no guarantee, it's safe to say that the Mercedes-Benz EQG will also have impressive off-roading manners. We know that it will sit atop 22-inch wheels, probably allowing it to match the G-Wagen's ground clearance of 9.5 inches.

Does the EQG have any new features?

The grille design on the EQG cocept is the most obvious difference between the two vehicles. The Mercedes star emblem is nicely situated among tiny blue LED dots, and the front bumper guard has been removed. It definitely looks more futuristic than aggressive, though we don't suspect it will detract from the G-Wagen's powerful character.
We know even less about the interior, only treated to a glimpse of cream-colored upholstery in the teaser photos. A standard G-Wagen usually has leather seats, with heating for both front and rear passengers. Mercedes also usually allows buyers to customize the interior colors for an extra fee, plus add upgraded leather and massaging features.
In the modern age, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has a fully digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen, together spanning over two feet long. Smartphone integration and a premium audio system come standard. It's completely possible that we may even see the MBUX Hyperscreen inside the EQS, complete with ARG elements.

What kind of auto insurance should you get for the EQG?

Mercedes-Benz says that the latest version of the EQG is a near-completion concept. It's tentatively labeled as a 2024 model, so we may see it released sometime in 2023.
When the Mercedes-Benz EQG is ready to be sold, you'll want to be ready with the right insurance. A luxury car is often more expensive to insure than a regular vehicle, so it needs more extensive coverage.
