background
Ford
enters the EV crate engine world by teasing a fully electric crate motor: the Eluminator. Electric crate converters are perfect for electrifying old cars.
Electric conversion soothes a common fear: with the looming electrification of vehicles in America, cars of the past will be rendered inoperable.
The Ford Eluminator will have its official debut at this year’s SEMA show.
What are the key details of Ford’s new electric motor?

The Ford Eluminator marks Ford’s entry into the electric crate motor world

According to
Car and Driver
, Ford’s electric crate powertrain solution is slated for a debut at the 2021 SEMA show that will take place in early November.
The Eluminator makes 281 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. That’s the same kind of motor found in a Mustang Mach-E GT, so it’s pretty good.
The motor weighs 205 pounds, which is less than half of Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8.
The Eluminator is cutely named as a variation to the Ford non-electric crate engine, the Ford Aluminator.
In terms of price, the Eluminator is priced at $3,900. Ford’s non-electric crate, the Coyote, starts at $9,500, which is much more expensive.
However,
Autoblog
points out some potential inconveniences to buying the Ford Eluminator. Buying the crate comes with the motor, the low- and high- voltage wiring harnesses, and a vent tube.
The Eluminator doesn’t come with a controller, a charger, or a battery pack. Therefore, you’ll have to source the other necessary parts of electric conversion from other companies.
You could probably also buy the supporting parts from Ford, presuming they sell them on the side. However, add all the price tags up and it will likely be a considerable amount.
Electric crate motors are getting increasingly popular as the world transitions into one with more hybrid and electric vehicles. They’re the perfect, affordable method of electric conversion.
Many companies are already entering the aftermarket electric motor game. General Motors (GM) started its plans to electrify old cars with the Chevrolet eCrate Connect and Cruise kit.
The Chevy eCrate Connect and Cruise debuted in 2018 and is set to hit the market sometime this year.
It looks like Chevy will see big competition in Ford Performance, the high-performance division of Ford.

Is it worth it to buy an electric crate motor?

That depends completely on your car preferences. Is it worth it to buy the eCrate or the Eluminator in 2021?
It might be a little early since OEMs are just beginning to offer crate electric powertrain parts. You never know whether there will be more affordable and better quality crates coming around the corner.
But in the long run, electric conversion might just be necessary for anybody who wants to drive a vehicle that won’t meet emission standards in the next decade.
It’s hard to say goodbye to a beloved vehicle just because of that, and electric conversion will be a solution.
