When it comes to speed, electric cars can flat-out haul. When comparing the two companies' Performance models, Car and Driver
found the Tesla Model S jumped ahead of the pack, hopping from 0-60 mph in a blistering 2.4 seconds. Car and Driver
tested the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance model at a not-too-shabby 3.7 seconds. Tesla also introduced the Model S Plaid in 2021 that could scream from 0-60 mph in 2.1 seconds.Tesla boosts its performance with an electric motor on each wheel to create a synchronized all-wheel drive that generates a composite 501 horsepower on the Performance model.
The Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance include motors on the front and rear axles to provide all-wheel-drive with a combined 480 horsepower.
The Tesla Model S also held an edge in range comparison, a vital feature for electric vehicle drivers. The Mustang Mach-E with extended-life battery tops out at 305 miles, according to EPA estimates.
Tesla, though, boasts a 412-mile range on its Long Range battery package and 390 miles on the powerful Plaid package.
However, Car and Driver's real-world 75 mph testing program found the Tesla Model S it tested, with an estimated range of 326 miles, managed only 222 miles, and the Plaid reached only 280 of its supposed 390-mile range.
How do the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model S compare in luxury?
One area where the Ford Mustang Mach-E matches or exceeds the Tesla Model S is in the interior comfort and storage.
The Mach-E interior varies considerably from the standard Mustang. The minimalist dashboard features a digital gauge cluster and a large, vertical touchscreen to handle infotainment and climate control.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E also has both heated seats and a steering wheel, customizable ambient interior lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a storage area under the front seat armrest large enough to hold a purse. The Bang & Olufsen audio system outputs great sound.
The Mach-E front trunk is made of durable plastic and can be rinsed and drained. It's an ideal place to carry ice and sticky foods. The trunk encompasses a massive 29 cubic feet of storage that can be expanded to 60 cf when you fold the back seats down.
The Tesla Model S features plenty of luxury in the interior but falls short of its luxury competitors from Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. The Model S sports a digital gauge cluster mounted atop the dash that is easily seen over the yoke steering wheel.
The broad horizontal infotainment touchscreen however may be difficult for some drivers to reach to the far side. The Model S does include a touchpad for rear-seat passengers.
The gently sloping rear of the Model S does create accommodation for a 26-cubic-foot trunk that includes a large under-floor storage bin. Storage on the interior is pretty sparse, especially in the rear seat.
Miles apart on the price tag
The Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model S are racing on different tracks when it comes to pricing. The Mustang Mach-E starts with a base price of $44,995 for the Select model and runs up to $66,095 for the GT Performance edition.
After some hefty price increases over the past year, the Tesla Model S Long Range edition now starts at $91,190, up from about $70,000 not too long ago. The Plaid version starts at $131,190.
