The 1965 Porsche 911 is perfection
There are cars, and then there are legends. While each vehicle to hit the market gets at least a little hype, the test of time usually ensures it's forgotten by the time the warranty runs out. That's not the case for the 1965 Porsche 911.
The 911 name originated due to the 911th design from the German company since opening its doors in 1931. The body was designed by Ferry Porsche Jr, the grandson of the Porsche founder.
It made its debut at the 1952 Frankfurt Auto Show, but the car that was displayed was only a prototype. The original name was 901, but that was changed.
Due to many changes on the prototype, Porsche wanted to put some distance between the 901 that was originally revealed, and the 911 that went into production.
When it first rolled off the production floor, it was meant to replace the Carrera 2. However, things weren't rolling fast enough. In the first six months of production, the 911 sold out, and there were a lot of potential owners putting in bids of their own.
What kind of specs does the 1965 911 have?
The 1965 Porsche 911 came equipped with a single-overhead-cam, air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine placed behind the rear axle. It also came with the same 5-speed gearbox that graced Porsche's 904 GT racing car.
The engine could generate 148 hp and had a top speed of 130 mph. The body was designed with aerodynamics in mind, and it was a blast to drive. It could go from zero to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds and took 20.0 seconds to reach 100 mph.
While Porsche originally planned to make it a four-seater, Ferry Porsche Jr had other ideas. He didn't want to design a sedan, he wanted a coupe. Looking back, he made the right decision, as the 911 wouldn't be the same with four doors.
The 1965 Porsche 911 has a shocking price
While Porsche doesn't hesitate to place rather high prices on its vehicles these days, in 1965, Porsche wasn't quite ready to make that jump. It considered $9,000 to be a rather steep price.
While that's almost shocking now, at the time, Porsche feared that only the extremely rich would be able to afford the car. That wasn't their goal. Considering that the Macan is currently the cheapest Porsche, and it starts at $54,900, that's more than a little shocking.
Even so, the 1965 Porsche 911 paved the way for Porsche to ask for whatever prices it wants, and consumers being willing to pay it. The great part is that while Porsche vehicles are expensive, they're still in the price range for many people.
