Why is teen driver car insurance more expensive?

Teen driver car insurance is usually more expensive because teens are seen as a high-risk driving group.
According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
, the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher for ages 16 to 19 than any other age group. In fact, teens in this age group are almost three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and over to be involved in a fatal crash.
Immaturity, lack of experience and high rate of distracted driving all reportedly contribute to the high rate of car crashes among teenagers.
Distracted driving in particular is a problem, as a CDC’s 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that among U.S. high school students who drove, 39.0% texted or e-mailed while driving at least once during the 30 days before the survey.
Younger drivers start to get more favorable car insurance rates when they hit the age of 25, but some companies do start offering lower rates for women when they turn 21.
