How do you release a locked seat belt?

I’ve been running into this issue pretty often, and thought I would try to find a permanent solution. My seat belt keeps locking and getting stuck every so often, and I don’t know how to fix it. How do you release a locked seat belt?

Since seatbelts are so important to the safety of your passengers and driver, addressing any problems immediately is crucial. That’s why it can be such a pain whenever your seatbelt locks in place.
You can take the following steps to diagnose and fix the issue:
  • Step 1: Pull on the seatbelt to try and release it from its auto-locking function. If it’s buckled in, unfasten it and gently let the seatbelt retract. If it’s still stuck, your seat belt might be twisted or jammed.
  • Step 2: Take off the plastic cover that holds your seat belt in place with a screwdriver. You’ll be able to see the belt look and its hardware. This is often located either on the side of the car or in the back seat itself.
  • Step 3: Pull the seat belt out entirely. This way, any kinks will straighten out. If there is anything else stuck inside, pull it out with pliers.
  • Step 4: Allow the seat belt to retract back in without any kinks. You can also replace the plastic cover as well.
