How Oakland County property taxes are determined

Oakland County property taxes apply to each of the county’s taxing districts. Your annual property tax payment is calculated based on the value of your home and the cost of specific public services that apply to where you live within your community. 
All of Oakland County’s community taxing district boards assess their public service costs to create a budget that’ll cover these costs. Then, the Oakland County Auditor determines a property tax rate for each district to fund public service budgets.

How to pay property taxes in Oakland County 

Oakland County property taxes are paid in two installments: once in the winter and once in the summer. 
Summer property tax bills are mailed out on July 1 and are due September 14. Winter property tax bills are mailed out on December 1 and are due on February 14
If you miss the summer due date, you’ll be charged 1% extra for each month your taxes are overdue. If you miss the winter deadline, you’ll be charged 3% extra for each overdue month. 
Cities and towns in Oakland County provide many convenient ways to pay your property taxes for both installments, but you can only pay for delinquent taxes at the county level. To pay delinquent taxes, you can pay online, by mail, in person, or via drop box or barcode

  • Pay via drop box: You can pay by check by dropping your enclosed payment in the drop box located on the west side of the Board of Commissioners Auditorium built into the landscaping wall near the gated staff parking lot. The box is marked "Tax Payments Only."
