background
The automotive industry is shifting gears quickly, and that means
automotive service
is changing as well. For service technicians, working on an EV is a lot different than tinkering with a traditional ICE vehicle. This means new safety precautions, and KPA, an industry-leading compliance and HR company, is advocating for new EV training for service technicians everywhere.
At Jerry, we may not be focused on training mechanics and technicians, but we’re all about advocating for new

KPA’s push for revised training for automotive service technicians

On August 3, 2022, KPA released a new
compliance training course
to raise general awareness about electric vehicle safety. The 15-minute course discusses critical information required to work safely on and around electric vehicles, including types of EVs, hazards, maintenance processes, and emergency response measures. It is a part of several new EV-focused resources and services provided by KPA to help clients maintain a safe and productive workplace.
According to Shawn Smith,
KPA’s
Product Director for Training, “With growing demand, dealers, collision centers, certain truck facilities, recreational vehicle shops, and all other auto-service businesses need to understand both the new hazards introduced by EVs and the relevant regulations associated with servicing these types of vehicles.”

What key training points is KPA hoping to teach automotive service technicians?

KPA is also working on a monthly series of training programs for supervisors. While a less-thorough course was released for technicians in early August 2022, these new tools, which will feature on-site consulting options, will compose what will be known as KPA’s EV Compliance Solution. It will be fully available later in the fall of 2022, and will focus on teaching automotive staff how to:
  • Quickly and skillfully battery damage and know how to respond to damage, if present
  • Take steps to prevent electrical shock when servicing electric vehicles
  • Safely conduct service work on high-voltage parts of an EV
  • Safely store and handle new, used, and damaged EV batteries
  • Safely ship and receive EV batteries and battery parts
  • Effectively put out
    EV battery fires
, and how to respond to an electrical fire or other emergencies
As EV sales continue to rise, EV safety and training tools will become an essential part of transitioning away from ICE vehicles in the automotive service workplace.
