A new challenger in the luxury electric car segment has appeared: the ultra-luxe Mercedes EQS. It is currently the first dedicated electric car in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, but the brand promises that there is more to come.
While the luxury electric car segment is still growing, there are a few already established competitors that Mercedes-Benz will have to contend with, namely Tesla. So how does the EQS stack up against the competition?
There are a lot of great electric cars out there, but with powerful specs and a starting price point of $102,310, one of the only real contenders that can go head-to-head with the EQS is the
Tesla Model X
.

The Mercedes EQS vs. Tesla Model X: power and performance

For comparison purposes, we will be looking at the EQS 450+ trim. The Mercedes EQS 450+ sedan has an MSRP starting at $102,310. The single electric motor provides 329 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 60 in just 5.9 seconds.
Both versions of the EQS have a 108-kWh battery pack with an EPA-estimated range of 350 miles and a top speed of 130 mph. Charging the EQS from a 10% charge to fully charged using a Level 2 charger takes 11 hours and 15 minutes, while going from a 10% charge to an 80% charge using a DC fast charger takes just over 30 minutes.
Now for Tesla. The most affordable version of the Model X has a base price of $116,440 for the Long Range trim. Its standard 20-inch wheels can tow up to 5,000 lbs. The battery also boasts a 348-mile range, which is right on par with the EQS. It goes from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
Consumer Reports’
road test concluded that for as large and as heavy as the SUV is, the handling is still quick and even-keel, but the ride is reportedly somewhat stiff. Even so, the Model X driving experience is comparable to that of a sports sedan, making it a formidable rival to the EQS.

Comfort and entertainment in a Mercedes EQS vs. Tesla Model X

The EQS sports a massive MBUX infotainment system that uses three total screens and an optional 56-inch touch screen. It also comes equipped with all of the latest technology and safety features including automatic emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW).
According to a road test done by
Consumer Reports
, the interior of the car is made for comfort and customization, with incredible attention to detail in almost every aspect of the ride. Drivers can choose from 64 different configurations of ambient interior lighting, several propulsion soundtracks, nature sounds with corresponding fragrances, and even heated, massaging seats.
The first thing you’ll probably notice about the Model X are its massive rear falcon doors that announce to everyone around that you, the Tesla driver, have arrived. Its futuristic appearance extends to the cabin which is roomy and minimalistic, with a windshield that extends over the top of the front seats.
True to Tesla design, the interior is minimalist, and most functions can only be accessed through the single 15-inch touchscreen. While some drivers enjoy the simplistic interior, others find it tedious and distracting for driving purposes.

Which car is the better choice?

Between the EQS and the Model X, it ultimately comes down to a matter of taste. These two cars are on par in almost every aspect, with some slight variations that are to be expected from such different brands.
The EQS delivers a more classic, stylish approach to luxury, while Tesla’s bold and futuristic design has won the brand accolades from early-adopters of electric cars and followers of CEO Elon Musk’s risky entrepreneurial style.
