How big is the gas tank on a Kia Sorento?

Since launching in 2003, the Sorento has been a popular SUV—and it has frequently changed the size of its gas tank. Through the years, its capacity has ranged from 17.4 to 21.1 gallons.
Find your model year below to see how many gallons of fuel your Sorento takes:
  • 2003 to 2009: 21.1 gallons
  • 2011 to 2013: 18 gallons
  • 2014 and 2015: 17.4 gallons
  • 2016 to 2020: 18.8 gallons
  • 2021 and 2022: 17.7 gallons
The Kia Sorento requires 87 octane unleaded gasoline. It can handle a higher octane rating as well, but (despite a number of popular myths) there aren’t really any benefits to using a higher octane level
The recent 2.0-liter turbo engine also uses 87 octane fuel, even though some turbo engines from other car brands require higher octanes.

How to check your Kia Sorento’s gas tank size

If you’re not sure which model year your Kia Sorento is or you’re just curious to learn how to find the volume of a gas tank on your own, here are a few options.

Measure the gas tank

If your reaction to doing math is like a vampire exposed to sunlight, skip this section.
But if you’ve got a tape measure and a calculator handy, this is maybe the most fun method of finding the volume of your gas tank.
Locate your gas tank and then measure the width, length, and height of the tank. Once you have those numbers, simply multiply them (width*length*height)
Now divide that number by the number of cubic inches in a gallon (231). The end result is your Kia Sorento’s gas tank size.

Check your owner’s manual

The easier method of course is simply to consult your Kia Sorento owner’s manual. Here, you’ll find your car’s gas tank size and fuel octane requirements, plus lots of other useful information.
If you can’t find the physical copy of your car’s manual, Kia has it available online for model years 2014 and beyond. Simply
visit the Kia Owner’s Portal website
to download the owner’s manual in PDF format.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

Feeling a little more adventurous? Here’s the riskier method of finding your Kia Sorento’s gas tank size: drive until you’re on “E” and then fill back up.
We don’t recommend running your car on empty. But driving until the gas light comes on and then filling it to the top will give you a rough, approximate gas tank size in terms of how many gallons you have to put in.

How to save on fuel costs in a Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento isn’t the thirstiest SUV on the road, but it’s not quite as fuel-efficient as some competitors. We all know gasoline is expensive stuff, so conserving fuel with these tips can go a long way toward saving you money:
  • Drive conservatively. Avoid unnecessary acceleration and aggressive driving. Pushing down on your gas pedal increases fuel flow, and the further that pedal travels, the more gasoline your engine is guzzling.
  • Keep up with vehicle maintenance, especially oil and other fluid changes. Don’t skip annual tune-ups, either. If your engine is running efficiently, it’s also using fuel efficiently.
  • Don’t “warm up” your car or leave it idling for no good reason. Your car warms up quicker when you’re driving and putting the engine to work. Letting it idle in your driveway for 20 minutes does little more than waste your fuel.

How to optimize your Kia Sorento’s insurance coverage
