The third row of seats in the
2022 Ford Expedition
has 36.1 inches of legroom. It’s one of the biggest passenger vehicles on the road, perfect for hauling people, cargo, or both.
Most of its available trims seat up to eight people and let drivers maximize cargo space by completely collapsing the second and third rows of seats.
Large SUVs are great for big families, people who need plenty of cargo space, or particularly tall people. There are plenty to choose from, so here’s a breakdown of the 2022 Ford Expedition’s third-row interior dimensions and seating capacity from

What is the Ford Expedition’s 3rd row like?

All but one of the 2022 Expedition’s ten available trims have three rows of seats.
The base trim, XL, which starts at $53,045, has two rows of seats with space for five people.
The King Ranch and King Ranch Max trims, which start at $76,780, have three rows of seats with space for seven, though their third rows are the same as those in the other trims. All other trims can seat between seven or eight people, the difference being the optional middle seat in the second row.

Space and comfort

Though the third row of seats in any car is bound to be the smallest, the Expedition offers just about as much third-row legroom as you’d find in any modern SUV. You’ll likely have more trouble fitting this veritable tank into a parking space than you will fitting your family into the car.
Here are the 2022 Expedition’s headroom and legroom measurements for each of its rows:
  • Third row: 36.1 inches of legroom, 37.3 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 41.5 inches of legroom, 40 inches of headroom
  • First row: 43.9 inches of legroom, 42 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 172 cubic feet
Here’s how the Expedition compares to other full-size SUVs in terms of third-row space and total passenger volume. They’re all similar, but the
Jeep Wagoneer
and
Chevy Tahoe
just barely beat the Expedition with less than an inch more of third-row space.

Is the Ford Expedition good for families and long road trips?

Yes—that’s exactly what it’s made for. If you need a car with much more space or seating, you’d be better off with a passenger van or a school bus or something.
Regardless of trim, the Expedition is packed with standard and optional features to make long trips more pleasant and comfortable, like third-row reclining seats and a panoramic sunroof. Driver-assistance features help drivers with everything from parking, collision detection, and attaching a trailer to managing the SUV’s enormous blind spots.
For the particularly adventurous, the new Timberline trim, starting at $70,120, features an upgraded suspension, all-terrain tires, and over 10 inches of ground clearance.
The 2022 Expedition earned the second-to-last spot in Car and Driver’s ranking of the year’s full-size SUVs, despite also getting a better-than-average 7/10 overall rating. They noted the car’s poor gas mileage and how expensive the top trim level is considering what it offers.
