Can you remove the backseats from an Audi A5 Cabriolet?

Yes—the backseats in an Audi A5 Cabriolet are removable. However, the A5 Cabriolet isn’t really meant to roll around without a backseat, so you’ll want to take a few safety measures into account:
  • Double-check your airbags. If you’ve removed the backseats, there’s a chance that the A5 Cabriolet’s side airbags won’t work properly. Make sure to consult the Audi A5 Cabriolet
    owner’s manual
to ensure that the airbags still work effectively without the seats.
  • Consider adding a tarp to the floor. After you’ve removed the back seats, there will likely be some exposed brackets or bolts on the floor. To prevent injuries (and make the cabin look a bit tidier), try adding a tarp, rug, or floor cover to the car.
  • Don’t lose the parts! If you ever want to put the seat back in, you’re going to need the parts that were removed. Make sure you keep them all together and label them so you’ll know what they are in the future.
Now let’s do this thing! Here’s a quick how-to on how to get those back seats out of there.

How to remove the backseats from an Audi A5 Cabriolet

Depending on the model year you have, there are three different methods that you might need to employ to get the back seats out. Here they are:
  1. Bolt system—the backseats in certain Audis are secured by four bolts. Access the two bolts at the back of the seat via the trunk, and unscrew them with a Torx wrench. The two bolts at the front are found under the seat at the level of the passenger footwell. Undo those bolts using a Torx wrench as well, and the seat should lift right out.
  2. Clip system—these will be found under the seat cushions, and are typically plastic clips with a metal insert. Press on the plastic part with a screwdriver and pull hard on the metal bits to release. It’s reported that these clips take some tugging to undo, so you might have to yank a little hard!
  3. Bolt system with forward folding seats—in some years, the back seats are only bolted at the front. The seats can be tipped forward to access and unto the bolts with a Torx wrench.
And that’s it! Don’t forget to throw a tarp or a blanket down to protect both the car and whatever you’ll be loading in there, and you’re good to go!

How do you put the back seats down in an Audi A5 Cabriolet?

If you don’t need that much extra space and removing the whole back seat is a bit much for you, then simply folding the seats down may be just the ticket. Again, your method will depend on the year of your A5 Cabriolet. Here are the three different ways it can be done:
  1. Pull the straps coming out of the space between the seatbacks and pull the seatback down.
  2. Push the button or knob that can be found near the upper seat belt attachment point and fold the seats down.
  3. Pull the knob/lever found around the seat belt locking clip, and pull the seats down.
When you’re ready to put the seats back up, make sure they snap fully back into place and that the seatbelts are accessible and not tangled.
