Does Rolls-Royce Have a Self-Driving Car?

Rolls-Royce’s self-driving concept car, the 103EX, has toured the world since 2016. Here's what to know.

background
Rolls-Royce made waves in 2016 when it introduced the 103EX, a fully-autonomous, futuristic concept car that toured the world for four years. However, Rolls-Royce does not have any self-driving cars for sale at this time—and newer models even shy away from driver assistance features that will eventually lead to autonomous driving.
Rolls-Royce is the pinnacle of luxury carmakers. And in that vein, they’re not in a rush to push self-driving technology—they tend to prioritize ease of use, classy exteriors, and the most luxurious driving experience available. With autonomous driving still in early stages, Rolls-Royce is likely waiting until the technology is perfect to include it in its models.
Even though Rolls-Royce isn’t rushing into the future, their 103EX concept car is a fascinating vehicle.

Does Rolls-Royce have a self-driving car?

The Rolls-Royce 103EX
is a fully autonomous concept car with a distinctive design that would fit right into a science fiction film.
Despite the impact of the 103EX and the success of its world tour, Rolls-Royce doesn’t have plans to roll out self-driving cars anytime soon. Instead, this luxury car manufacturer is prioritizing electric and hybrid vehicles.
Here are some of the stand-out features of the 103EX
  • All-electric drivetrain
  • An enhanced A.I. named Eleanor that charts your route and acts as your personal assistant
  • Fully autonomous driving system
The car design is unforgettable as well, with a massive presence, covered wheel wells, and a roof and door that swing up and out to allow standing entry. The interior features a silk lounge chair and luxury materials. There’s no wheel inside the cabin of the 103EX—the front of the cabin features a glass panel.
It’s not certain if or when Rolls-Royce will start to manufacture the 103EX for a consumer market, but you can be sure that when it gets into the self-driving cars game, Rolls-Royce will make autonomous cars look and feel better than ever.
Key Takeaway The 103EX is Rolls-Royce’s autonomous concept car. Although there are no known plans to manufacture more self-driving cars, Rolls-Royce continues to push the boundaries on luxury and electric-powered vehicles.

How do self-driving cars work?

A “self-driving car” is exactly what it sounds like—a vehicle that can get you from point A to point B without you having to so much as touch a steering wheel. With the convenience and safety potential of an autonomous car alluringly just out of reach, it’s no wonder that self-driving cars are the hottest topic when it comes to modern car manufacturing.
Autonomous vehicles, in theory, use video cameras and LiDAR sensors to inform deep learning systems and powerful algorithms, which in turn use information from the surroundings to safely navigate roadways, traffic signals, and complicated driving maneuvers.
Of course, we haven’t yet reached a world where autonomous cars are the norm. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has broken down the six steps to reach autonomous vehicles (AVS):
  • Level 0: No automation. A regular car with a human driver operating it at all times.
  • Level 1: Driver assistance. Technology takes care of one driving task such as steering, acceleration, or braking, while the human driver controls the rest.
  • Level 2: Partial automation. Two or more driving tasks are automated with the driver managing the rest.
  • Level 3: Conditional automation. The entire car is automated in certain conditions. The human driver must be ready to take back control at any time.
  • Level 4: High automation. The car doesn’t need human intervention but can only function in certain scenarios.
  • Level 5: Full automation. Human intervention is not required. The car is fully autonomous in all conditions.
The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
is still looking into whether fully autonomous vehicles are as safe as we hope they will be. But we’re still a fair ways away from reaching Level 5. Until then, we can dream of a future filled with self-driving cars.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
