background
If you’re interested in flat towing your
Ford Bronco
, you’re in luck. According to the Ford Bronco owner’s manual for models 2021 and newer, all Broncos, regardless of trim and drivetrain, can be flat towed safely. Older models, however, may pose some serious safety threats during flat towing.
Flatbed trucks and trailers are the holy grail of towing, though that kind of towing can quickly rack up an expensive bill. Thankfully, flat towing—which puts your vehicle on all four wheels—is an affordable towing alternative for drivers looking to tow their vehicles behind a motor home.
The downside is that flat towing, when done with the wrong cars, poses the risk of seriously damaging your vehicle, potentially even running the risk of voiding your warranty and insurance coverage.

Can you flat tow a Ford Bronco?

If the Ford Bronco you want to flat tow is from 2021 or later, then yes, it can be flat towed safely.According to the 2021 Ford Bronco owner’s manual, the vehicle can be safely flat towed regardless of whether it is equipped with a manual or an automatic transmission
For older Ford Bronco models, as well as the
Ford Bronco Sport
, flat towing can—and likely will—result in seriously damaging the model’s transmission and should not be attempted. Flat towing an older Ford Bronco model against the owner’s manual’s guidance can result in both your warranty and insurance coverage being voided.

How to flat tow a Ford Bronco

Now that you know that you can flat tow your 2021 or 2022 Ford Bronco, you’ll need to understand how to do it safely. Flat towing is more complicated than simply attaching a tow bar between your Bronco and your motorhome or RV and will require you to take certain precautions to avoid damaging either vehicle.
Follow this step-by-step guide to safely flat tow your new Ford Bronco:
  • Connect your Ford Bronco to your motorhome or RV using a tow bar by attaching to the D-ring connections
  • Connect the tow bar to your motorhome or RV by connecting to the RV’s receiver hitch
  • Use breakaway chains to further secure the connection between your RV and Bronco
  • Connect your Bronco and RV using a breakaway brake wire as well
  • Connect your Bronco to the seven-way trailer wiring connection point using the light harness
  • Start up your Bronco and let the engine idle at about 1,000 RPM
Whether you’re towing a manual or automatic Bronco, you’ll need to engage Neutral Tow in order to safely flat tow. To activate Neutral Tow you’ll need to:
  • Switch your Bronco into accessory mode by pressing the push-button ignition without pressing on the brake, accelerator, or clutch
  • Press the 2H button on the four-wheel-drive mode control
  • Next, depress the brake pedal and shift your Bronco into neutral (N)
  • Select the “Settings” function using the instrument cluster controls on the steering wheel
  • Select “Neutral Tow”
  • Press and hold the “OK” button—a confirmation message will appear on your Bronco’s information display
  • You can now release the brake, leaving the Bronco’s transmission in neutral (N)
  • Shut off the engine by pressing the push-button ignition switch once—do not touch the pedals
Now that Neutral Tow is initiated, you can proceed with hooking up your Ford Bronco to be safely flat towed using the following finishing steps:
  • Install a brake controller between your brake pedal and driver’s seat
  • Connect the brake controller to your Bronco’s 12VDC power source—this is where you would typically find a cigarette lighter
  • Test to make sure that your brake controller is properly connected by pulling the breakaway wire. This should cause the Bronco’s brakes to engage. If everything is working properly, reattach the breakaway wire
  • Switch on the lights on your motorhome or RV. Take a quick walk around your Bronco to make sure that turning on your RV’s lights also turns on your Bronco’s turn signals, brake lights, and running lights.
  • If everything is in working order, you are now ready to flat tow your Ford Bronco!
Before flat towing your 2021-2022 Ford Bronco, make sure that you’ve switched your climate control system into its recirculated air mode. This will prevent exhaust fumes from your RV or motorhome from entering your Bronco’s cabin and causing serious damage.
