background
For 113 years, Bugatti has been making extraordinary, beautiful, high-performance vehicles. The tradition continues with the Bolide, its most recent—and perhaps most interesting—concept car to date.
Concept cars give designers, engineers, and manufacturers the creative space to take their automotive aspirations from the sketchbook to the racetrack and beyond. The Bugatti Bodine has fulfilled this initiative with a hypercar designed just for the track

2020 Bugatti Bolide Overview

The Bugatti Bolide concept car married lightweight vehicle technology with an enormous 16-cylinder engine to produce a masterful car that can reach 60 mph in 2.17 seconds. The 2,733-pound vehicle’s top speed is 310 miles per hour
The downforce from the aerodynamic, open, and minimalist body makes this top speed possible on such a lightweight car. Bugatti describes the experience of driving a Bolide to be like “riding on a cannonball.”

The Bugatti Brand

Bugatti is well known for its exclusive and artistic line of luxury and high-performance cars. If you want to own one for yourself, you’ll have to be a millionaire—at least. The cheapest Bugatti model is the Veyron, which in 2021 was priced at $1.7 million
At the high end, you’ll find the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, starting at $18.7 million. Soon, a market version of the Bolide will be available, with moderate changes, for $4.7 million. They’re a special kind of car designed with a specific kind of person in mind—someone very rich, who wants to go very, very fast

Bugatti Bolide Specs

For the 2020 Bugatti Bolide concept car, the French manufacturer came up with a new engine design best used at high speeds. It features a de-throttled intake and exhaust system, which allows the car to respond more instinctively.
Four turbochargers enhance the car’s boost pressure and power when it’s going at higher speeds—so high that the Bolide needed a specially redesigned dry-sump lubrication system to cope with the centrifugal force produced by the car’s acceleration.
The Bolide’s new cooling system keeps the engine running, along with another special cooling system to keep the brakes working at high speeds.
Finally, its exterior design is both art and science combined. Its vented exterior opens the car up to seize aerodynamic force while also reducing its weight, both of which contribute to its enhanced capability for speed. The appearance is at once organic and futuristic and seizes on classic Bugatti styling cues that have defined the brand for years.

FAQs

In 2021, Bugatti sold just 150 cars worldwide—a significant uptick from 2020 when they only sold 77 cars. Still, with the starting price on the cheapest model at $1.7 million, even selling a few dozen vehicles is quite an accomplishment.
Bugatti’s engineers employed special materials and alloys to ensure a lightweight vehicle that would optimize the wind’s downforce at high speeds. For instance, the car’s screws and fastening elements are titanium, which is much lighter than steel. Other components are made with a super-thin, 3D-printed titanium alloy that provides strength and stability while being very lightweight.
