What is an interstate highway?
Typically, when a highway is designated as an “interstate,” it means it passes through at least two states.
But I-12 actually only passes through one state! Even though it’s technically an intrastate highway, the
highway
gets the interstate designation because it was built to interstate standards. The numbers of an interstate can also tell you a little about it. A two-digit number indicates an interstate, while odd numbers indicate a north-south route. An even number—like I-12—indicates an east-west route. Finally, if an interstate number ends in 0 or 5, it’s usually a pretty significant corridor.
