What is the Honda CR-V Special Edition?

The 2016 Honda CR-V remains a popular used car. The CR-V came in five trims: LX, SE, EX, EX-L, and Touring.
Prices for used 2016 Honda CR-Vs vary based on trim, mileage, and condition but tend to fall between $19,000 and $26,000. Used 2016 Honda CR-V SEs sell for around $20,000.

2016 Honda CR-V overview

Before we dive into the SE trim, let’s take a quick look at the 2016 Honda CR-V.
The 2016 model year was the last of the excellent fourth generation of Honda CR-Vs. Every model in this generation earned a U.S. News score of 8.3/10 or better. U.S. News named the 2016 Honda CR-V the 2016 Best Compact SUV for Families. That said, the car offers something for everyone to enjoy.
In 2015, Honda improved the CR-V’s handling, suspension, and sound dampening, making for a much smoother and more satisfying ride. The 2016 Honda CR-V has a five-seat interior, with ample head and legroom for drivers and passengers alike. The 2016 Honda CR-V came standard with Bluetooth and a rearview camera. A navigation system and a 7-inch touchscreen were also available.
Under the hood, the 2016 Honda CR-V came with a 2.4-liter I-4 engine capable of producing 185 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Its all-wheel-drive variant delivered 25/31 mpg city/highway and 26/32 mpg for the front-wheel-drive model.
Key specs
  • $19,000–$26,000 used
  • 2.4-liter I-4 engine
  • 185 hp
  • 181 lb-ft of torque
  • 1,500 lbs towing capacity
  • 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space

What’s special about the Special Edition?

The 2016 Honda CR-V LX trim is already pretty tricked out. The LX came with 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, a conversation mirror, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and full power accessories. It also came standard with Bluetooth audio, four speakers, a USB port, and Pandora compatibility.
The SE trim added just a few key features. Unlike the LX, the SE trim came with a security system, rear privacy glass, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Used 2016 Honda CR-V SEs cost only about $1,000 more than used LXs. The SE’s strongest selling point is probably its security system. If you live in an area where property crime is common, it may be worth springing for the SE.

2016 Honda CR-V Special Edition vs. Touring

While the SE trim adds few features, the top-of-the-line Touring trim takes the 2016 Honda CR-V to the next level. Six years since the car’s introduction, 2016 Honda CR-V Tourings still command up to $26,000. Key features of the 2016 Honda CR-V Touring include:
  • 18-inch wheels
  • Projector-beam headlights
  • Power liftgate
  • Automatic braking
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • HD radio
  • Navigation system
Is the Touring trim worth it? That depends on your priorities. If you’re looking for a safe, functional car at the best possible price, you may want to stick with the base LX trim. If you desire added security and an extra splash of style, the SE trim is an outstanding deal.
For the best in safety, style, and technology, purchase the Touring trim. Just be aware that added features don’t just cost more at the dealership. They also make your car more expensive to insure.
