What’s included in a Nissan multi-point inspection?

Earlier we equated a Nissan multi-point inspection to a regular doctor’s checkup—and that’s really the best way we can think to describe it. Just like how a doctor regularly inspects you to make sure you’re healthy and in good shape, a certified technician will do the same for your Nissan vehicle.
During the inspection, a technician will inspect the following:
  • Lights. These include the headlights, tail lights, turn signals, etc.
  • Battery. Your Nissan technician will test and see how much charge your battery has, and recommend whether or not it needs replacing.
  • Brake pads. Brake pads are essential for safe driving, and they’ll need to check to ensure they are thick enough.
  • Horn. You need your horn to communicate with other drivers on the road!
  • Steering wheel. Another critical component of safe driving: your Nissan technician will make sure that it is securely mounted to the steering column.
  • Fluid levels. The fluid level inspection includes brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and even windshield wiper fluid.
  • Differentials/transfer case. In front-wheel drive vehicles, differentials aid in dividing the power from the transmission to the drive wheels. In all-wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case splits the power between the front and rear drive axles.
  • Tire tread depth. If your tires are in shoddy shape, your Nissan technician will schedule a service appointment to replace your tires.
  • Tire rotation and balance. Property rotated and balanced tires will cause less tread wear out.
  • Belts and hoses. Engine belts, seat belts, fuel hose—you name it!
  • Wiper blades. A faulty wiper blade can leave giant streaks behind, which can seriously impact visibility and lead to dangerous driving.
  • Engine oil. They will check the engine oil levels to determine if it’s time for an oil change.
  • Cabin air filter (also known as the microfilter). The cabin air filter prevents dust, debris, and other junk from entering your Nissan’s cabin. Over time, the microfilter can become clogged up and will need replacing.
  • Radiator core and cap. Many common engine problems can be traced back to the cooling system, which is why it’s important to check and make sure your Nissan’s radiator core and cap are working as they should.
  • Suspension system. Inspecting the shocks, struts, and springs will ensure that your Nissan drives smoothly no matter how bumpy the road ahead is.
  • HVAC system. There’s nothing worse than a too-hot or too-cold cabin, so an HVAC inspection will help maintain that Goldilocks temperature.
As you can see, this is quite a comprehensive list! On average, it takes between 45 minutes and two hours to complete a Nissan multi-point inspection. Once it’s finished, your genuine Nissan technician will give you a report card detailing which parts are working, which parts need replacing, and which parts may present problems later down the road.

How often to get a Nissan multi-point inspection

There’s never really a bad time for a multi-point inspection. If you think that something isn’t running right, it’s probably time to schedule service. As a rule of thumb, we’d recommend you bring your Nissan in once a year. But, if your vehicle is newer, you may get away with bringing it in every other year
There are certain events that may prompt you to get a Nissan multi-point inspection a little ahead of schedule. If you’re planning on taking a lengthy, perhaps even
cross-country road trip
, it’s a wise idea to schedule a multi-point inspection before you hit the road.
When you’re buying a used car or selling your vehicle, it’s helpful to request a multi-point inspection as well. That way, whether you’re the buyer or the seller, you can rest assured that there won’t be any unexpected surprises after the point of sale.
Depending on where you live, your state may also require a yearly or twice-yearly vehicle inspection. Many of these state inspections primarily focus on emissions testing and are far less thorough than multi-point inspections.
Multi-point inspections are for your sake as a vehicle owner, while state inspections determine whether or not your car complies with your state’s legal requirements—they are not the same thing.

Costs and benefits of a Nissan multi-point inspection

How much you pay for your Nissan multi-point inspection depends on where you get it done. Many Nissan express service centers across the nation offer complimentary multi-point inspections—and it’s pretty hard to beat that kind of price! Keep in mind that, should your vehicle need any repairs, you will still have to shoulder that cost.
We’d always recommend you take your Nissan to a certified Nissan dealership or service center. That way, you know that your mechanic is certified to look at your Nissan engine and will only use OEM Nissan parts. Plus, taking your Nissan elsewhere can cost between $150 and $200 for the inspection.
Not only will a multi-point inspection give you greater peace of mind behind the wheel, but it can actually help you learn a thing or two about how to spot potential engine problems. And, when it comes to car repair, sooner is always better than later: allowing a minor problem to fester unchecked can cause even more costly damage in the long run.
