Why you should know your Volkswagon’s lug pattern

Lug patterns, also called bolt patterns, refer to the number and spacing of the lug holes on your car’s wheels. Lug patterns comprise two numbers: the first tells you the number of lug holes, and the second is the diameter of the imaginary circle that would form if you connected all of the holes.
For example, a wheel with a 5x4.5 lug pattern has 5 holes arranged in a circle with a diameter of 4.5 inches.
It is also common to see lug patterns presented with metric measurements, especially for European makers like Volkswagen. In this case, the diameter is presented in millimeters: 5x114.3 for example.
If you need to replace your wheels, knowing your Volkswagon’s lug pattern is an essential bit of information to make sure you buy the correct parts.

Lug pattern terminology 101

If you aren’t familiar with the jargon of wheel measurements, then deciphering the above table is like reading a foreign language. Let’s translate it for you by defining our terms.
OEM wheel size: OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturer”. So the OEM wheel size is just the diameter of the original wheels that came on your Volkswagen.
Lug pattern: AKA bolt pattern, this refers to the number and spacing of the lugs on your rim and hub.
Offset: On most wheels, the mounting surface is not in the center of the rim. The difference between the mounting surface and the center is the wheel’s offset. A positive offset means the mounting surface is toward the outside of the vehicle, thus pulling the wheel under the car more. Most Volkswagens have a high offset (+35-45 mm).
Stud size: The measurements of the studs that attach your rim to the hub. In the US, fasteners are expressed as stud diameter x threads per inch (e.g. ⅜ x 20). Metric fasteners are written as stud diameter x distance between threads in mm (e.g. 14 x 1.5). The metric measurement is presented in the table above.
Hub/center bore: This measurement is the diameter (in mm) of the opening in the middle of the rim that centers the wheel on the hub.

How to measure your Volkswagen’s lug pattern

If your Volkswagen model is not in the table above or if you want to know how to measure it for yourself, it’s super easy.
The first step is just to count the lug holes. Then, grab a ruler or tape measure and measure the diameter of the circle that connects the holes.
If there is an even number of lug holes, just measure from the center of one hole to the center of the hole directly across.
If there are five lug holes, there is a trick to take away any guesswork. Start at the outside edge of one lug hole. Take the measure directly across (you’ll end up between two lugs), and measure to the center of one of the opposing lug holes.

FAQs

No! A 5x114.3mm metric bolt pattern is the same as 5x4.5 inches. The metric conversion for a 5x4.4 lug pattern would be 5x112mm. Though these are very close, 5x4.4 and 5x4.5 rims are not interchangeable.
Many, but not all, Volkswagen and Audi models have the same bolt pattern. The 5x4.4 bolt pattern is the most commonly used measurement for both makes.
