2019 Honda Recon engine oil capacity

The Honda Recon is powered by a 229cc air-cooled OHV single-cylinder four-stroke engine. It has an oil capacity of 2.0 quarts (1.9 liters).
Keep in mind that the oil capacity and the engine’s displacement are two different measurements:
  • Oil capacity is the amount of oil needed for an oil change
  • Engine displacement is the volume that the engine cylinders occupy
These numbers are not interchangeable and should not be confused. This is important as adding the wrong amount of oil can lead to engine damage.

What kind of oil does a Honda Recon need?

Each engine will have a specific oil type it requires to run safely and efficiently. Honda recommends using 10W-30 oil in the Honda Recon.
Here’s a breakdown of what this means:
  • The numbers indicate the oil viscosity—how thick the oil is. The higher the number, the thicker the oil is.
  • The “W” stands for winter and indicates the oil has a different viscosity in cold temperatures.
The number 10 before “W” means the oil will have a viscosity of a 10-weight oil at 0°F. The number 30 means that it will act like a 30-weight oil when it gets warmed to 210°F. This multi-grade oil allows the engine to operate at different temperatures. It also helps to reduce wear and tear.
While synthetic oil is safe to use in your Recon, be sure to use an oil specifically formulated for ATVs. It should also meet the same requirements mentioned, such as a premium-grade 10W-30 synthetic oil for ATVs.
Always try to use the recommended oil to ensure that your engine runs optimally. There is also the risk of voiding your warranty if you use the wrong oil type.
To get you started, consider these options:
  • Manufacturer’s recommendation: The owner manual recommends using Honda GN4 10W-30 Oil
  • A high-quality synthetic oil: If you want to extend the time between oil changes, try 10W-30 Synthetic ATV/UTV Engine Oil

How often to change oil on a Honda Recon

You’re ready to do an oil change once you’re familiar with the Honda Recon oil capacity and type.
Honda recommends an oil change every 100 hours of use or every 600 miles for conventional oil. However, if you tend to run your Recon hard, doing oil changes more frequently will ensure your engine oil is clean.
However, synthetic oil has a longer service life so you can wait longer between oil changes.
The best time to change the engine oil will depend on how you use the Honda Recon. Checking your oil level regularly is a great way to confirm if an oil change is needed. If you see the following signs, it’s time for some new oil:
  • The motor oil is dark brown or black—clean oil is light brown or amber
  • There is a coarse or gritty feel to the oil
  • You hear unusual sounds from the engine
  • You smell oil, smoke, burning, or unusual smells
  • You are getting poorer vehicle performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Before an oil change, you will need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. You will also need to buy a replacement filter and two quarts of premium 10W-30 engine oil
Run the engine until it reaches the normal operating temperature before starting. This should take no longer than five minutes in warm weather. Turn off once the oil is warmed up and follow these steps:
  • Place the drain pan under the oil drain hole
  • Remove the oil fill cap at the top
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer under the engine
  • Wait for the oil to drain into the drain pan
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 18 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with new oil and replace the fill cap
You will also need to remove the old oil filter located on the side of the Recon and install the new filter.
Use the dipstick to check if there is enough engine oil—the oil level should be between the fill lines. Once you complete the oil change, run the engine for a few minutes so that you can check for any leaks.
When cleaning up, the old oil should be placed in a sealed container and brought to a local recycling facility. Do not dump the oil onto the ground or put it in your garbage bin.

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

Regular oil changes are important for keeping your Honda Recon running smoothly and doing it yourself will help save time and money!
