2019 Honda GX390 engine oil capacity

The GX390 is an air-cooled 4-stroke OHV engine with an engine oil capacity of 1.16 quarts (1.1 liters).
Do not confuse this with the fuel tank capacity, as these numbers are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a Honda GX390 need?

Every engine works optimally with a specific oil type. Honda recommends using SAE 10W-30-1 for general use in the Honda GX390. Be sure that it can be used for 4-stroke automotive engines.
Here’s a breakdown of what this means:
  • The numbers represent the oil viscosity—the thickness of the oil. The lower the number, the thinner the oil is.
  • The “W” stands for winter and is an indication of a multi-grade oil, depending on the temperature it is in.
The number 10 before “W” means the oil has the viscosity of a 10-weight oil at 0°F. The number 30 means that it has the viscosity of a 30-weight oil when warmed up to 210°F. This ability to change viscosities allows the engine to run safely in different temperatures, which reduces wear and tear on the engine.
High-quality synthetic oil is also safe to use in your GX390.  It should be the same oil viscosity and have the API Certification Seal.
It is important to use the recommended oil to ensure that your engine can run smoothly. Using a different oil type could also void your warranty.
To get you started, consider these options:
  • From the owner’s manual: To follow the manufacturer’s recommendation, use Honda Pro Honda GN4 Motor Oil - 10W30-1
  • For high temperatures: According to Honda, you can use 10W-40 oil in these engines if the temperatures will exceed 100°F.

How often to change oil on a Honda GX390

Now that you know the Honda GX390 oil capacity and type, you can
change the oil
Honda recommends an oil change every 100 hours for conventional oil. This can be hard to gauge, so an alternate benchmark is to change the oil every six months to ensure your engine oil is clean.
However, synthetic oil has a longer service life, so you can wait longer between oil changes.
It can be hard to gauge the best time to change the engine oil, especially when it also depends on your usage. If you are unsure, you can check the oil level regularly. Your GX390 engine is due for an oil change if the following signs are present:
  • Dark brown or black motor oil—clean oil is light brown or amber
  • Coarse or gritty motor oil
  • Abnormal sounds coming from the engine
  • Unusual smells, including oil, smoke, or burning
  • Deteriorating performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When doing an oil change, you will need a 10 mm box end wrench, drain pan, and funnel. You will also need a replacement filter and two quarts of premium 10W-30 engine oil
Before changing the oil, run the engine until it reaches the normal operating temperature so that it can drain quickly. Once the oil is warmed up, turn off the engine and follow these steps:
  • Place the drain pan under the engine
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and sealing washer
  • Allow the old oil to drain completely into the drain pan
  • Reinstall the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 17 lb-ft
  • Using a funnel, refill the engine with new oil until it begins to run out of the oil filler neck
  • Replace the fill cap
You will also need to replace the oil filter. The location will depend on what automotive the GX390 engine is installed on.
After completing your oil change, it’s time to clean up. The old oil should be placed in a sealed container and brought to a local recycling facility. Do not dump the oil onto the ground or put it in your garbage bin.
