2022 Subaru Crosstrek engine oil capacity

So, how much engine oil do you need to change the oil in your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek? The answer depends on which engine you have.
The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which gets 152 horsepower. This engine has an oil capacity of 4.6 quarts, or around 4.4 liters.
The other engine option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which delivers a far more exciting 182 horsepower. This one has a slightly reduced engine oil capacity of 4.4 quarts, or around 4.2 liters.
Keep in mind that there is a significant difference between the 2.0 and 2.5 liters used to describe the engine size—or displacement—and the numbers that denote engine oil capacity. Displacement refers to the amount of space each engine takes up, while engine oil capacity is the amount of oil needed for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek need?

To change your oil, you’ll need to know more than just the amount of oil required—you’ll need to know what kind of oil it takes.
While the amount of oil varies based on the engine, the type of oil does not. No matter what, you should use 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil for an oil change.
Those characters refer to the viscosity of the oil at different temperatures. In this case, 0W-20 means that it has a low viscosity—indicated by the 0—at a temperature of 0°F. The “W”  stands for “winter.” It also means that on the other hand, at high temperatures of around 212°F, the oil's viscosity is 20, which is still pretty low.
You also need to look for full synthetic oil, as opposed to conventional oil or a synthetic blend. This is a more expensive type of oil, but it allows you to wait longer between oil changes.
It is also manmade, so it doesn’t contain sediment that can stick to the engine and clog it up.

How often to change the oil on a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek

If you’re wondering how far you can drive between oil changes, there are a couple of rules of thumb you can follow to stay on track.
For a car or SUV that uses full synthetic oil, like the Crosstrek, experts recommend that you complete an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. If you don’t drive your car that often, you should default to changing your oil around once a year
There are some signs to look for that an oil change might be necessary sooner rather than later. If you notice one or more of the following, it’s time to take a closer look:
  • Exhaust smoke coming from the tailpipe
  • Dark brown or black oil
  • Oil that has a coarse or gritty texture
  • Knocking or rattling coming from the engine
  • The smell of oil, burning, or smoke
  • The check engine oil light on

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it comes time to change the oil in your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, you can take it to a mechanic who can do the job for between $40 and $100. You can also complete the oil change at home, but first, you’ll need the required tools.
  • A drain pan
  • A replacement filter and washer
  • A socket wrench
First, find a level spot to park your
Subaru
and run the SUV for a few minutes to get it up to operating temperature.
Start by removing the oil fill cap from the engine. Then, get underneath the engine and place a drain pan underneath the oil drain bolt. Remove the oil drain bolt and drain the old oil into the pan.
Replace the oil filter, as well, if it is time to do so. Experts recommend changing your oil filter every other time you change your oil. To do this, you’ll remove the old filter and install the new one after you have drained the old oil.
Replace the oil drain bolt and secure it with a new washer. Now, you're ready to refill the engine oil and replace the fill cap. Make sure to run the SUV for a few minutes to check for any leaks, then check the engine oil levels with the dipstick.
The last step? Make sure you don’t toss the old oil in the trash or down the drain, which can lead to environmental damage. Instead, place it in a sealed container and take it to your closest recycling center.
