Why is my 2016 Ram 1500 backup camera not working?

If your 2016 Ram 1500 backup camera isn’t working properly, you’ll be happy to know it’s likely caused by a blown fuse, disconnected wire, or dirty lens. All of which are easy fixes!
When it comes to troubleshooting fussy electronics a simple reboot is in order. First, try restarting your backup camera screen, and if that doesn’t work, disconnect your battery.
You’ll want to determine whether you can fix the backup camera issues yourself before taking your Ram to a mechanic–saving you both time and money!

Common backup camera issues for the 2016 Ram 1500

While the 2016 Ram 1500 doesn’t have any rear backup camera recalls, there are a few backup camera issues drivers have frequently reported. Below are the most common backup camera issues and their potential solutions:

Backup camera has gone blue

If your backup camera turns blue when you are in reverse, you’re probably dealing with a blown fuse. Luckily, you can fix this problem by changing the blown fuse in a few short steps:
  • Turn off and disconnect the car battery
  • Pop the hood and locate the fuse box
  • Identify the backup camera fuse and remove the blown fuse
  • Insert the new fuse and any others that are blown
If the blue screen persists, you may not have replaced the right fuse. Check the fuse code map in the middle of the fuse box to make sure you’re changing the backup camera fuse.

Cloudy backup camera

A cloudy or foggy backup camera is usually caused by rain or mud and has the simplest solution. Just wipe down the backup camera with a microfiber towel and cleaning solution. Make sure to rub gently so as to not move the backup camera.
You may need to replace a blown fuse if your backup camera is still cloudy after cleaning it. If the problem continues after you replace the fuse, you’ll want to head to a mechanic to determine the route cause.

Green lines on the screen

Do green lines appear on your backup camera screen when you put your Ram into reverse? This is the most common Ram 1500 backup camera problem and can be fixed with a software reset. There are two ways you can reset your backup camera to factory settings:
  • Disconnect the battery. Open the hood of your Ram and detach the car battery for 30 minutes. When you reconnect the battery, the backup camera should reset and the green lines should be gone.
  • Turn the ignition on and off. With all doors closed insert your key and turn on the ignition without starting your truck. Tap the upper right corner of the backup camera screen and press down for 20 seconds. Turn your ignition off and then on before starting your vehicle. This should reset your backup camera.
If resetting your software doesn’t make the green lines on your backup camera screen go away, you should take your truck to a local Dodge dealership to have it inspected by a professional technician.
