How to change your oil and oil filter

When you’re ready to change your oil out, you’ll need to gather the following tools:

Socket wrench

Drain pan

Filter wrench

Replacement oil filter

4.4 quarts of fully synthetic 0W-20 engine oil

Before you pop open the hood, -run the engine for about 5 minutes until your Corolla reaches normal operating temperature. Once your engine is warmed up, turn it back off and execute the following steps:

Open the hood and take off the oil cap.

Place your drain pan underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer to let the old oil drain out.

Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the old oil drain.

Install the new filter after all the old oil has completely drained out.

Remove the oil drain plug and replace it with a new washer, then tighten it to 29 lb-ft.

Pour fresh oil into the engine and use a dipstick to make sure you’ve poured enough.

Screw the oil cap back on, turn your engine on again, and check for any leaks.

After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
