background
When it comes to the 2015
Subaru WRX
’s oil capacity, both engines take 5.4 quarts, which means you’ll want to purchase at least 6 quarts of motor oil.
In 2015, Subaru released a newly-updated version of their WRX model, which MotorTrend referred to as a “street-going rally rocket.” The base 2015 Subaru WRX boasts a 268-hp engine (while the STI trim has a turbocharged engine that pushes out 305-hp).
Not only is the WRX a fun, sporty compact with attitude, but it’s also a Subaru, which means you can easily drive one into the 200,000-mile club if you’re faithful about regular car maintenance.
Changing the oil in your WRX is an important part of keeping your Subaru happily humming along. And if you’re looking for advice about oil changes, you’ve come to the right place.

2015 Subaru WRX engine oil capacity.

The 2015 Subaru WRX oil capacity is 5.4 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil.
What does 5W-30 mean? The number 5 refers to the viscosity—or resistance to flow. The lower the number, the better the oil will flow (the thinner it pours). The letter W refers to Winter. Combined with the number, it refers to how well the oil will flow in cold weather.
If you go out to buy some 5W-30, you may be surprised to find that some oil manufacturers label their containers in liters rather than quarts. No worries. Just keep in mind that 1 liter is slightly more than 1 quart.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Subaru WRX need?

First, let’s start with conventional vs. synthetic oil. Subaru recommends synthetic oil. You’ll notice that conventional oil is less expensive than synthetic, but keep in mind that synthetic oil offers some distinct advantages
It offers a higher-quality oil base, which means you can go longer between oil changes. However, the fact that it is higher-quality means it is also better for your engine.
Second, your WRX takes a 5W-30 motor oil, but what exact brand? Let’s begin with the official recommendation. Subaru recommends that you use
Genuine Subaru Oil
and Oil Filters. According to Subaru, their oil is formulated with unique additives that meet the needs of WRX engines.
When changing the oil, you’ll also want to install a new oil filter. Many Subie owners recommend that you stick with a
Genuine Subaru Oil Filter
, which is fairly inexpensive (less than $10).
However, other companies make filters that will fit your 2015 WRX. Just be sure to type in the correct model year and trim when selecting a filter.

How often to change oil on a 2015 Subaru WRX

Although many people will say you can go up to 7,500 or 10,000 between synthetic oil changes, Subaru recommends you change the oil in your WRX every 3,500 to 5,000 miles.
Why should you change your oil more frequently? A 2015 WRX has a turbo engine, and some mechanics argue that the use of the turbo puts a bit more wear on an engine. Also, as your WRX ages, it will require more oil.
Between oil changes, check your oil and oil levels. About twice a month—or every other refuel—many WRX check their oil levels. When checking your oil, look for these changes, which signal the need for an oil change:
  • Black or dark brown oil
  • Gritty feeling or coarse oil
  • Oil that has a burning smell

How to change your oil and oil filter

Before you change the oil in your WRX, be sure to assemble the following:
  • 6 qts. of 5W-30 synthetic oil
  • Funnel to pour in the oil
  • Oil filter to fit a 2015 Subaru WRX
  • 14 mm ratchet to unscrew the drain plug
  • New crush washer for re-installing the drain plug
  • Drain pan (for used oil) and paper towels and cardboard to trap
  • Jack stand (or Rhino ramps) and wheel chocks to secure your WRX
After you’ve parked your WRX in a level area, start your Subaru’s engine and let it run for about 5 minutes. You’ll want to do this so that the used oil will easily flow out of the engine.
Shut off the engine, put your WRX in first gear with the emergency brake on (be sure your WRX is secure), open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Jack up the front end of your WRX and put wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Go underneath the car. Locate the drain bolt and be sure to place the drain pan underneath this area. You may also want to put down some cardboard as well.
  • With the ratchet, unscrew the oil drain bolt and washer. Let the used oil drain out.
  • As the old oil is draining into the drain pan, go under the hood and remove the old
    oil filter
  • Install the new filter.
  • Go back under your WRX. Using a new crush washer, replace the oil drain bolt once all the old oil has drained out. Tighten the bolt to the recommended torque.
  • Now return to the engine area. Using the funnel, pour in the new oil.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.
Once you’ve put in the new oil, you’ll need to check that you have no leaks and the oil level is where it should be. To do this, start your engine. After the engine has been running for a few minutes, use the dipstick to check the oil level and add more if needed.
One final note: be sure you dispose of the old oil properly. Take your used motor oil to a motor oil retailer such as Auto Zone or Advance Auto. Another option is to take it to a recycling center that accepts motor oil.
Never pour oil into the ground or dispose of it with your regular trash.
