background
The 2013
Ford Edge
was a solid entry in the competitive family SUV class, with stable handling, a comfortable ride, and great fuel economy. But to keep this reliable car on the road, you’ll have to know its oil capacity and how often it should be changed.
There will always be costs associated with owning a car, such as annual insurance payments and maintenance costs. But if you want to save money on your Ford Edge, you can do things like changing its oil at home instead of taking it to a shop.
If you're not sure where to begin or just want to learn more about your Ford Edge's oil capacity, we've got you covered.

2013 Ford Edge engine oil capacity

To get started, we'll need to know how much engine oil a 2013 Ford Edge needs.
This
3.5-liter V6 engine
has a capacity of 6 quarts (or 5.7 liters) of oil. Keep in mind that your engine's oil capacity (the amount of oil required for each oil change) and displacement (the 3.5L volume its cylinders contain) are not the same things.

What kind of oil does a 2013 Ford Edge need?

Selecting the best type of oil is just as important as knowing how much oil your Ford requires. Choose quality 5W-20 detergent oil instead of the first product you see on the shelf. That's what Ford suggests, and it's important to follow their recommendations.
But what are those numbers and letters supposed to mean? The oil grade numbers represent the viscosity or thickness of the oil, while "W" stands for winter. The number 5 before "W" indicates that this oil is thin (has low viscosity) at low temperatures, and 20 indicates that it is also thin at high temps!
These oils perform well in most temperatures and have a low viscosity, which reduces engine wear. The term "detergent oil" simply indicates that the oil aids in the prevention of corrosion, sludge, and oil deterioration.
Particular oil can make your Ford Edge run better and last longer—here are some of our suggestions:
  • Owner's manual recommendation: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
  • Alternative recommendation: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil

How often to change oil on a 2013 Ford Edge

Your oil becomes contaminated over time, making it less efficient for your engine. To keep things running well, Ford recommends
changing your oil
every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.
Check your oil level frequently (once per month or every other time you fill up) to ensure that it's replaced when it should be. Look out for the following symptoms that it's time to change your oil:

How to change your oil and oil filter

When changing oil, you can go to a mechanic or do it yourself. Whatever you select, you'll usually also need to change your oil filter. If you do the job at home, you'll need a drain pan, filter wrench, socket wrench, fresh filter, and 5W-20 engine oil.
Start by turning on the engine and letting it warm up for around five minutes. Afterward, turn off the engine, let it cool down, pop the hood, and complete these steps:
  • Find the oil filter and drain bolt, and remove the bolt.
  • Drain the old oil
  • Replace the oil filter
  • Tighten the drain bolt to 29 lb-ft
  • Pour in the new oil
  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
After you've finished, run the car for a few minutes to check for leaks. If everything was done correctly, the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard should now be off.
The last step is to get rid of the mess! You shouldn't just toss the old oil on the ground or in the garbage. Instead, you should put it in a container and take it to a nearby recycling center for proper disposal.

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance
