How to change your oil and oil filter

Before you change your oil, do some planning. Purchase 6 quarts of API certified 10W-30 synthetic oil and a new oil filter. You’ll also need a socket wrench, a drain pan to collect the used motor oil, and a filter wrench to remove the old oil filter.

Park your Jeep in a level area and secure it by putting on the parking brake and placing wheel chocks behind the wheels. Start your XJ’s engine and let it run for about 5 minutes. This will ensure the old oil flows more easily into your drain pan.

Shut off the engine, open the hood, and follow these steps:

Locate and then remove the oil fill cap.

Place the drain pan underneath the oil drain bolt. (You’ll need to crawl underneath your XJ to do this.)

Remove the oil drain bolt and washer. At this point, the old oil should begin to drain into the drain pan.

Use the filter wrench to take out the old oil filter while the oil continues to drain out.

Install the new filter.

Start your engine, checking for any leaks. After the engine has been running for a few minutes, stop and wait for three minutes. Then use the dipstick to check the oil level and add more if needed.

Dispose of the old oil properly. Never pour oil into the ground or place it in your trash. Instead, take your used oil to a recycling center that will accept it. Or to any retailer who sells oil, such as AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts.
