2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine oil capacity

Let’s get right down to it: how much engine oil does a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee need?
The 3.6L engine in your 2014 Jeep has an oil capacity of 6 quarts or 5.6 liters and the 5.7L engine has an oil capacity of 7 quarts or 6.6 liters. Keep in mind that this number differs from your engine displacement—the volume your Jeep’s cylinders take up. Your oil capacity, on the other hand, refers to the amount of oil your vehicle needs each time it goes in for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee need?

So you know how much oil your Jeep needs, but just what kind of oil should you use to fill it up?
While you’re searching for a 6-quart bottle, keep your eye out for what the Jeep manufacturers recommend: SAE 5W-20 fully synthetic motor oil.
If you’re new to the engine oil game, you’re probably wondering what exactly all those letters and numbers in each oil name mean. The numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity level at different temperatures. In this instance, a 5 directly preceding the “W” (standing for “winter”), this oil will flow with ease at lower temperatures
On the other side of the “W”, the number “20” indicates how well the oil will flow at higher temperatures—the lower the number, the better.
If you’re not sure where to start, following the owner's manual recommendation of SAE 5W-20 motor oil is always a safe bet.

How often to change oil on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

You’ve got your oil, you know how much you’ll need, and you’re ready to
change your oil
! But does your engine actually need an oil change? Generally speaking, your engine will be ready for an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles
If you’ve opted for synthetic oil, your engine will last for a longer time and a greater number of miles before you need to change it. To stick to what the experts recommend, you should change your synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
If you’re unsure when your last oil change was or you’re unsure of the state of your oil, you can look out for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Gritty or coarse oil
  • Dark brown or black oil (Hint: If your oil is clean, it’ll resemble a cup of tea. If it looks like a cup of coffee, it’s ready to be changed.)
  • Strange noises or smells arising from the engine. Keep your nose out for anything smelling of oil, burning, or smoke
  • Deterioration in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Changing your oil can be a fairly simple process, so long as you’re prepared with the right tools. All you’ll need is a socket wrench, drain pan, a filter wrench, and a replacement filter and you’re set!
To get started, turn your engine on and allow it to run for a few minutes. Once it’s reached a normal operating temperature, you can turn the engine off and open the hood. Follow these steps to change your oil:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer and drain the oil into the drain pan
  • Once the old oil has drained, install the new filter
  • Using a washer, install a new oil drain bolt and tighten it
  • Refill the engine with your new oil
  • Reinstall the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
If everything looks good, you can run your vehicle for a few minutes to test out the new oil. Once you’ve completed the process, you can reset your dashboard’s oil light.
