How to change your oil and oil filter

You will require an oil drain pan, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench if you decide to change your oil and oil filter at home—and don’t forget to purchase five quarts of full-synthetic 0W-20 motor oil and a new filter.

Once you have all the required equipment, start your car by turning the key in the ignition and let it run for a few minutes until the engine reaches normal operating temperatures. This should only take four to five minutes under normal circumstances..

As soon as the engine reaches the correct temperature, turn it off, open the hood, and do the following:

Locate the oil reservoir, then remove the oil fill cap.

Put your drain pan in position directly below the oil reservoir drain hole. Use the socket wrench to remove the drain bolt and washer. Let the oil drain.

As the oil drains, remove the oil filter with the filter wrench.

Install a new filter.

Once the oil finishes draining, replace the drain bolt and fit a new washer into place. You will need to consult your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s tightness recommendations.

Put fresh oil in your engine and screw the oil cap back into place.

After adding fresh oil to the reservoir, check with a dipstick to see if it reaches the maximum fill line. If the oil level looks good, turn your car on and let the engine warm up. Check for leaks..
