The most common 2014 Jeep Cherokee problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received a total of 2,218 complaints from drivers about the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, with the most common complaints regarding the engine (454 complaints). The engine has been known to stall or die unexpectedly—so often that the problem was deemed an 8.6/10 in severity by Car Complaints, which lists an additional 718 complaints.
The transmission of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is especially infamous, with Car Complaints calling it “junk,” and telling buyers to “AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.” These complaints have rolled in before the car has even hit 40,000 miles, with problems usually starting at the 28,000 mile mark.
If the consumer reports weren’t enough, there have been two separate factory recalls regarding the car’s transmission. Both recalls—the first in 2016 and the second in 2019—were in response to the vehicle’s transmission unexpectedly shifting into neutral, increasing the risk for a crash.
Other than the engine and transmission, owners reported the following common problems with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee:
  • Too little trunk/hatch space
  • Lack of forward visibility
  • Trouble with in-car electronics
  • Poor body integrity leading to cracks, leaks, and breakages
These issues vary in severity, and sometimes it can be hard to tell if an issue is minor or major. That’s why it’s important to get your car tuned up regularly—not only will you keep it in the best shape possible, but your mechanic can help you identify any problems that might have the potential to worsen over time.

Is the 2014 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a decently reliable car, but not necessarily a top choice compared to other competing sedans like the
Chevy Equinox
and the
Buick Encore
It earned some promising reliability scores from major car reviewers, getting a score of 71/100 from J.D. Power on its reliability and quality in addition to a score of 4/5 on its reliability from RepairPal.
However, the Cherokee has been through a total of 12 factory recalls, including the ones mentioned earlier. Out of those 12, nine dealt with problems that increased risk for crashes, two dealt with fire hazards, and one dealt with an increased risk for injury (due to improper torque on the seat fasteners).
With all these issues considered, the average cost to maintain a Cherokee each year is about $539.
