2010 Toyota RAV4 engine oil capacity

The engine oil capacity of a 2010 Toyota RAV4 will depend on the engine it has under the hood.
The entry-level 2.5-L I-4 takes 4.7 quarts or 4.4 liters of oil, while the V6 engine’s oil capacity is 6.4 quarts or 6.1 liters. These volumes include the oil filter.

What kind of oil does a 2010 Toyota RAV4 need?

Your owner’s manual recommends 0W-20 Toyota Genuine Motor Oil for the 2.5-liter engine and 5W-30 Toyota Genuine Motor Oil for the 3.5-liter V6. That said you can also use 5W-30 for the 2.5-L engine or 10W-30 for the 3.5-L engine if you’re in a pinch.
These viscosity ratings describe how thick your oil is from freezing temperatures (the W stands for “Winter”) to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally speaking: The higher the number, the thicker the oil.

How often to change the oil on a 2010 Toyota RAV4

Feeling confident? Then go ahead and
change the oil and filter
in your 2010 Rav4! But just hold on for a second, let’s not get too eager. Are you sure it’s time to change your oil?
Toyota recommends changing your 2010 Rav4’s oil every 5,000 miles. If you’re using synthetic oil, you should be able to go about 7,500 miles and sometimes longer.
Regardless of how long it’s been since your last oil change, you should check your oil at least once each month. Be alert for these telltale signs that your SUV needs more oil:
  • Oil appears especially dark and opaque, not light and translucent like fresh oil
  • Oil feels dirty/sandy/gritty
  • Strange noises/smells from the engine
  • Vehicle performance has decreased in quality

How to change your oil and oil filter

If it is time for an oil change, then we better get to it! First, you need some supplies:
  • 14-mm socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • New replacement oil filter
  • Funnel
  • Ramps or jacks to lift the car
  • Gloves
  • Rags
  • 4.7 quarts of 0W-20 or 6.4 quarts of 5W-30 oil (depending on the engine)
It’s a good idea to run the engine for about two to three minutes because the heat makes the oil thinner and makes the draining process go more smoothly.
When you’re ready to proceed, follow these steps:
  • Open the hood of your car
and unscrew the oil fill cap.
  • Ideally, use a floor jack to lift your RAV4 to make it easier to get underneath it.
  • Once under the car, find the oil drain plug and position the drain pan to catch the oil when you unplug it. You might need to reposition, so stay alert!
  • Loosen the oil drain plug with your socket wrench, but not all the way. Once it’s loose enough to move with your hand, use your hand to remove the drain plug with a firm grip. Otherwise, you risk losing it or getting oil all over your wrench.
  • Remove the old oil filter and install the new one.
  • Once the draining is finished, replace the oil drain plug, and tighten it to 15-20 lb-ft.
  • Finally, pour your fresh oil into the oil fill opening, and don’t forget to screw the cap back on when finished.
After running the car for about 30 seconds to circulate the new oil, check the oil level and check for leaks. Also, don’t forget to recycle the old oil by pouring it into sealed containers and taking it to a designated recycling center.
Finally, reset your oil change system. If you don’t have a smart key here’s what you need to do:
  • Turn the engine off when it shows the trip meter A reading.
  • Press and hold the trip meter reset button and turn the engine switch to “ON.”
  • Keep pressing and holding until the trip meter shows “000000”
If you have a smart key, you’ll be using the “ENGINE START STOP” switch, turning it off with the trip meter A shown.
