background
The Toyota Sienna is a reliable and beloved player in the minivan market, but you’ll need to stay on top of maintenance like oil changes to keep the Sienna performing its best. To perform an oil change on a 2009 Toyota Sienna at home, you should know that it has an engine oil capacity of 6.4 quarts with the filter.
While it’s been a while since the 2009 Toyota Sienna was introduced to the market, many still stand by the minivan’s top-tier ranking. Owners of this Sienna will need to be sure to keep up with regular maintenance, like oil changes, to extend its life, though. To properly change the oil, you’ll first need to know what type of oil it needs and the engine oil capacity of your model.
This info can be found in your owner's manual, but if you’ve misplaced yours, or you simply want a bit more insight,

2009 Toyota Sienna engine oil capacity

So how much engine oil do you need for a 2009 Toyota Sienna? No matter the trim level, all Toyota Sienna’s impressive 266-horsepower V6 engines have an oil capacity of 6.4 quarts, or 6.1 liters.
The engine itself is a 3.5-liter engine, but the 3.5 here stands for the engine’s displacement—or the amount of space the V6 takes up. The oil capacity, on the other hand, is very different—that 6.4 quarts is the amount you will need for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2009 Toyota Sienna need?

Just as important as how much oil you use for an oil change is what kind of oil you use. When you walk into that aisle of an auto parts store, you may be overwhelmed by the number of choices. Luckily, Toyota has some guidelines you can follow to ensure that you use the best oil for your Sienna: the owner’s manual suggests using SAE 0W-20 motor oil.
What do all those letters and numbers mean? Well, the numbers stand for the oil’s viscosity, or how thick it is. While the first number, “0”, stands for the viscosity at 0°F (indicated by the “W” for winter), the second number, “20”indicates the viscosity in hot running temperatures of up to 212°F. SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, which is responsible for coding oil types and their viscosity.
Making sure you have oil that is the correct viscosity is vital to keeping your engine running smoothly and for as long as possible. The low viscosity will keep everything properly lubricated, and lead to less wear and tear on your engine
Toyota specifically recommends that you use synthetic oil for your oil changes, so look for an oil that states this on the label. If you’re not sure where to start, consider these three options:
  • For the purist: The owner’s manual for the 2009 Toyota Sienna recommends SA 0W-20 synthetic oil.
  • To maximize fuel economy: Toyota Genuine SAE 0W-16 synthetic motor oil can also be used and has been known to maximize fuel economy and reduce engine warm-up time.
  • A close second: If you can’t find the Toyota brand of motor oil, you can use the ACDelco full synthetic motor oil SAE 0W-20. ACDelco is a General Motors brand but can be used in non-GM vehicles.

How often to change oil on a 2009 Toyota Sienna

The next question is, of course, how often should you change the oil in your 2009 Toyota Sienna?
Toyota recommends that you change your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Synthetic oil is more refined than other kinds of oil and leads to reduced friction, a longer shelf life, and less frequent oil changes. However, if you don’t drive very often, it's important to check your oil level and quality regularly to make sure you’re not overdue for an unplanned change.
You can also look for a few tell-tale signs that it's time to change your oil:
  • If your motor oil is dark brown or black
  • If the motor oil is coarse or greasy
  • If strange noises are coming from the engine
  • If strange smells are coming from your engine
  • If there are any changes in your vehicle's performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

With all of this in mind, you’ve got everything you need to complete an oil change on your 2009 Toyota Sienna. To get started, grab your 6.4 quarts of engine oil, as well as a replacement filter. You’ll also need:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench
First, you’ll want to run the engine for a bit to get it up to normal operating temperature. Once it’s there, turn the engine off, and pop the hood. Then, follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap.
  • Then remove the oil drain bolt and its washer, to begin draining the old oil into the drain pan.
  • Take out the old oil filter as the oil drains.
  • Place the new filter in.
  • Use a new washer to replace the oil drain bolt, then tighten it.
  • Refill the engine with your new oil.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.
You can use your dipstick to be sure you’ve added enough oil. Then, let the car run again for a few minutes and watch to be sure there are no oil leaks. Make sure the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard has turned off as well.
To dispose of the oil, place it in a tightly sealed container and bring it to the closest recycling center. Placing oil in the garbage or pouring it down a drain or onto the ground can contribute to major contamination of the environment.
