background
The 2006 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L engine has an oil capacity of 6.1 quarts or 5.8 liters with the filter. This is the amount of Toyota Genuine SAE 5W-30 motor oil you’ll need to complete a regularly scheduled oil and filter change.
  • A 2.7-liter engine refers to engine displacement or the volume occupied by an engine’s cylinders. It is not the same as oil capacity!
  • Dirty oil looks black, gritty, or coarse and needs to be changed immediately.
  • You should not exceed 10,000 miles without getting an oil change.

2006 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 engine oil capacity

Despite having an
engine displacement
of 2.7 liters, the standard four-cylinder engine in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma has an oil capacity of 6.1 quarts (or 5.8 liters).
Oil capacity and engine displacement can be easy to confuse, but it’s crucial that you differentiate these two measurements. Engine displacement tells you the volume that your engine’s cylinders occupy, but you’ll need much more oil in rotation to keep your powertrain lubricated and working properly.

What kind of oil does a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 engine need?

You can’t just put 6.1 quarts of any engine oil in your 2006 Tacoma. Instead, you’ll need to look for your manufacturer’s recommendation at the auto parts store to make sure you’ve got a compatible product.
Toyota recommends using Toyota Genuine ILSAC multigrade SAE 5W-30 motor oil in the 2006 Toyota Tacoma—regardless of engine configuration. You can use a different brand of motor oil, so long as it has the same grade and viscosity, but sticking to Toyota Genuine is the easiest way to make sure you’re using the right oil.
Start by looking for motor oil—Toyota typically recommends synthetic over conventional oil, that meets the SAE 5W-30 specification. This denotes oil’s thickness across a range of temperatures and is essential for keeping your engine running properly. Then, you can easily identify a compatible grade of motor oil by looking for an ILSAC certification mark on the bottle.

How often to change the oil on a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 engine

A standard Toyota maintenance schedule recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for conventional oil or every 7,500 miles for synthetic oil. You should never exceed 10,000 miles without going for an oil change.
However, your oil change frequency may need to change depending on the condition of your 2006 Toyota Tacoma. You should get in the habit of checking the oil in your old truck once per month or every other time you fill up your tank.
Start by using your truck’s dipstick to check your engine oil level, topping it off if the oil falls below the range marked by the dipstick’s two notches. Then check the oil’s quality: If the oil is black, coarse, or gritty, then it’s time to perform an oil change. You may also be due for an oil change if you notice decreased performance in your truck or any odd sounds or smells coming from the engine.

How to change your oil and oil filter

.
Head to the auto store and grab a socket wrench, filter wrench, drain pan, and replacement filter with at least 6.1 quarts or 5.8 liters of SAE 5W-30 motor oil. Let your car’s oil heat up a bit by running the engine for a couple of minutes, then turn it off, open the car hood, and perform the following steps:
  • Drain the old oil: Remove the oil fill cap from up top, then slide underneath your Tacoma with a drain pan. Place it below the oil drain, then remove the bolt and washer.
  • Replace the filter: After the old oil has completely drained, use your filter wrench to remove the old filter and replace it with a new one.
  • Prepare the oil reserve: Don’t forget to close up the oil drain before adding new engine oil! You’ll need to use about 29 lb-ft of torque to replace the old bolt. Use a new washer if you have one.
  • Add new engine oil: Fil the oil reserve with your 6.1 quarts of SAE 5W-30 motor oil. Check your oil level with the range on your dipstick and add or remove oil as needed.
  • Circulate the new engine oil: Close up the oil fill cap and run your engine for a few minutes to let the new engine oil fill the filter and start circulating. This is a great time to check for any leaks and make sure your
    oil pressure light
    is off.
Your 2006 Toyota Tacoma may be ready to drive on for another 3,000+ miles, but you’re not quite done with your oil change just yet! You’ll need to properly dispose of your old engine oil by taking it to a local recycling center. Do not throw old engine oil in the trash or dump it on the ground, as it is considered a hazardous waste material.
