Switch your Mitsubishi Outlander to Eco mode for an environmentally and fuel-friendly driving experience.

background
The Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode is one of six available driving modes and adjusts the engine’s power output to use less gas and produce fewer emissions.
Mitsubishi has been including Eco Mode as a standard driving feature in all Outlander models since 2014. On the most recent Outlander models, Eco mode is just one of six custom driving modes. It reduces the amount of power the engine uses to encourage maximum fuel efficiency and minimum environmental harm.
But is Eco mode really worth shifting into? Does it actually save on gas and is there really much difference between Eco driving and normal driving? Here to answer these questions and more is

What is Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode?

The Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode is a standard driving feature that works to reduce fuel consumption and thus produce fewer harmful emissions. Think of “eco” as standing for both ecological and economical.
When switched on, the Outlander’s Eco mode limits the power output of the engine so it doesn’t put in as much work while you’re driving. Eco mode is optimized for leisurely, smooth driving, ideally under 45 mph, because it makes your gas pedal less responsive. The more even distribution of engine power will prevent that quick acceleration, which tends to eat up fuel easily.
Not only can utilizing Eco mode in a Mitsubishi Outlander help you save on fuel costs and lessen your environmental footprint, but it can also help to keep your engine in good shape for a longer period of time. Take aggressive acceleration—and as a result, probably aggressive braking—off the driving menu and your engine will be able to operate within more comfortable parameters.
There are several functions of Eco mode that allow for even more driving adjustments. Open the Eco mode setting menu from the settings menu on your driving display and you’ll find several options:
  • Eco Customize deals with your Outlander’s air conditioning system. Switch it on to have Eco mode balance the amount of engine power routed to your AC system.
  • Eco Drive Assist gives you the option to turn on the Eco Indicator and Eco Drive Report for alerts on your good and maybe not-so-good driving habits.
  • Eco History allows you to track your fuel consumption and fuel efficiency.
  • Tire Pressure Eco Advice will let you know when the tire pressure in any of your wheels drops below the recommended psi for optimal Eco mode functioning.
Key Takeaway Mitsubishi Outlander Eco Mode adjusts the engine’s power output so your vehicle doesn’t work as hard, consume as much gas, or produce as many emissions.

Does Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode save fuel?

Mitsubishi is hesitant to say that Eco mode in the Outlander will save you fuel because your vehicle’s fuel consumption can depend on many different factors. However, when Eco mode is used effectively, it’s entirely likely that you’ll notice better fuel economy—even if it isn’t necessarily drastic.

Does Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode charge the battery?

The electric/gas hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also comes with an Eco mode that functions in much the same way. Even when it is turned on, your battery will still catch a charge. Mitsubishi utilizes regenerative braking technology to transform the kinetic energy produced from braking into electricity that can pump a bit more juice into the battery.

What’s the difference between Mitsubishi Normal and Eco mode?

The Normal mode in your Mitsubishi Outlander is the standard, default driving mode. It balances the engine’s power output to adjust for different road conditions and performance needs. You’ll be able to step on the gas pedal and get a reaction here, but it won’t necessarily be too punchy. Eco mode, on the other hand, will make your gas pedal less touchy to produce a smooth drive unfocused on performance.

How to turn Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode on and off

Turning Mitsubishi Outlander Eco Mode on and off is as easy as turning a dial. On your center console, you will see a drive mode selecting dial. It has six drive modes listed and all you have to do to switch to the Eco mode is to turn the dial until Eco mode is selected.
Ready to go back to Normal or crank it up to Tarmac for higher performance? Turn Eco mode off by simply turning the dial to the driving mode you want.

Is Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode worth it?

This depends! If you prefer high performance and sensitive reactivity when driving, Eco mode in your Mitsubishi Outlander will just slow you down.
However, if you lean closer to the folks who want an easy-going, unrushed, fuel-efficient ride, or even if you’d simply be interested in ways to improve your fuel economy and environmental friendliness, the Mitsubishi Outlander Eco mode can totally be worth it.
It is worth noting, though, that Eco mode is optimized for a leisurely drive pace, around 45 mph or below. Eco mode probably won’t do much for you if you spend a lot of time on the expressway.
