background
Mile Auto offers
pay-per-mile auto insurance
to low-mileage drivers. They do not monitor drivers’ driving habits like other
telematics programs
; instead, they pride themselves on protecting their customers’ privacy by tracking their number of miles driven through odometer readings.

Mile Auto overview

Mile Auto is a new car insurance company that offers pay-per-mile insurance. Pay-per-mile insurance, also called pay-as-you-go insurance, allows policyholders to only pay for the amount of miles they drive. According to Mile Auto, if you are a low-mileage driver, you can save up to 30% to 40% on your insurance costs.
Fred Blumer, Jim Cook, Joe Fuller, and Scott Nelson founded Mile Auto in 2017. They are headquartered in Atlanta,
Georgia
. Mile Auto policies are underwritten by Spinnaker Insurance.
Mile Auto is currently available in
Arizona
,
Florida
,
Georgia
,
Oregon
,
Tennessee
, and
Texas
. They have plans to expand to other states in the future.

Is Mile Auto right for you?

Mile Auto is a good option for drivers who don’t spend a lot of time behind the wheel, such as:
  • Retirees
  • People who work from home
  • Part-time workers
  • People who live close to their place of employment
If you drive less than 10,000 miles a year or so, it may be a good idea to consider a pay-per-mile car insurance policy. However, make sure you do some comparison shopping before deciding on a policy.

How Mile Auto works

To receive your pay-per-mile rate from Mile Auto, you’ll follow these steps:
  1. Take a picture: Mile Auto doesn’t use an app, plug-in device, or any other tracking devices to monitor your car. Instead, its MVerity system will send you monthly text and email reminders to submit a photo of your odometer to them. Once you send a picture, the MVerity system will read your odometer and confirm its authenticity.
  2. Check your rate: Once the MVerity system confirms your mileage for the month, it will calculate your rate and you will pay your monthly insurance premium.
Your rate will include a monthly base rate and a per-mile rate. Both of these rates will be determined based on standard insurance criteria, such as your
driving history
, location, vehicle, age, credit history,
coverages
,
deductibles
, and more. The variables that Mile Auto uses will also vary depending on the state you live in.
For instance, if your monthly base rate is $48 and you have a per-mile rate of $0.08, and you drive 300 miles in one month, your bill for the month will be $72. This number includes the monthly rate of $48 and your per-mile base rate, which is $24 (300 miles x $0.08 per mile).
Though rates vary by driver and the amount driven, Mile Auto policies currently average about $38 per month for minimum coverage and just $78 per month for full coverage.
Remember: Pay-as-you go policies like those written at Mile Auto are great options for those who drive less than the average motorist. Average drivers are unlikely to save and are even more likely to pay more by choosing a pay-per-mile policy.

What it covers
Most states require drivers to purchase basic liability coverage. Liability coverage pays out for damage that you cause to other drivers—not your own. A typical policy will include
bodily injury liability
and
property damage liability
.
Collision coverage is an optional coverage that is often sold as part of a full-coverage policy. It pays out for damage to your car after a collision with another vehicle or object, like a wall or guardrail.
Comprehensive coverage is an optional coverage that is often included in a full-coverage policy. It will pay out for damage to your car in incidents other than collisions, including vandalism, natural disasters, and more. Collision and comprehensive are usually required coverages if you finance or lease a car.
PIP pays out for medical expenses after a covered accident.
This is an optional coverage that you can include in your Mile Auto policy. Roadside assistance usually includes services like towing, jumpstarts, fuel delivery, locksmith services, and tire changes.
If your car can’t be driven after a covered accident, rental car reimbursement coverage will cover the price of a rental car for you to use while your car is being repaired.
Uninsured motorist coverage will pay out for a driver who is involved in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t have enough car insurance coverage.
