Jeep head-up display: what is it and do you need it?

The head-up display (HUD) is not just a futuristic gimmick—it is a feature to enhance your road safety. With HUD, vital information is projected onto the windshield within the driver’s line of sight. This allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road, rather than looking elsewhere to check the speed or entertainment system.
The HUD works with a series of mirrors relaying the information from the Jeep’s information screen to the windshield. The curve of the mirrors provides a 10-inch full-color, easy-to-read, rectangular display in a position that allows the driver to remain focused on the road.
There are four modes available for the screen: Simple, Standard, Advanced, and Custom. Depending on the chosen mode, the following information can be displayed:
  • Current speed and speed limit
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure graphics
  • Lane-keep assist warnings
  • Night vision warnings
  • Turn-by-turn navigation
  • Current gear setting
Drivers can adjust the brightness and height of the display to their preferences. The customized displays can also be programmed to the driver profile so you can switch right back to your preference easily.
With Jeep Night Vision, for example, your HUD can detect unexpected pedestrians and help prevent accidents. Although a HUD isn’t essential, it is a great feature that helps prevent
distracted driving
—a major cause of fatal crashes each year.

Which Jeep models have a head-up display (HUD)?

A 10-inch full-color head-up display has been available on a few Jeep models since 2021 for an additional cost. Below are the prices for available packages to add a HUD to specific 2023 Jeep models:
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland
: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group III package
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit
: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group IV package
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group IV package
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group III package
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group IV package
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve: Available for $2,235 with Advanced ProTech Group IV package
  • Jeep Wagoneer Series II: Available for $3,695 with Convenience Group package
  • Jeep Wagoneer Series II Carbide: Available for $3,695 with Convenience Group package
  • Jeep Wagoneer L Series II: Available for $3,695 with Convenience Group package
  • Jeep Grand Wagoneer: More information is forthcoming
The cost for the head-up display varies across models as it also depends on the contents of each package available. The Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L share the same package and come with a plethora of tech goodies, which keeps the cost lower. However, this option is only available on higher trims.
On the other hand, the Wagoneer package includes features other than extra technology, which adds to the total cost if you want the HUD.

Can you add a head-up display to a Jeep?

For those who already own a Jeep and are missing out on a head-up display, don’t fret! You can still add a HUD system to spruce up your ride. The only downside is the additional costs associated with this upgrade.
There are many aftermarket suppliers dedicated to retrofitting vehicles with head-up displays. Since the screen won’t be built into the windshield, the total cost will likely be less—around $450. While these HUD devices will still provide drivers with the essential information, they tend to look bulky and may disrupt the interior aesthetics of your Jeep.
If you’re looking to add an OEM Jeep HUD, this could be a costly and cumbersome task. Not only will you need to replace the entire windshield, but you also need to completely replace the dash so that it has the corresponding technology. This can cost upward of $2,000, which is nearing the cost of the packages listed above. It may be a better route to trade in your current Jeep for a newer model with a HUD already installed.

How to use the Jeep head-up display

Using the head-up display can be intimidating—especially when there are so many options that can be customized. Thankfully, the Jeep HUD is simple to use.
To configure your head-up display, follow these steps:
  • Push the up or down arrow button on the left side of your steering wheel until “Settings Menu” is highlighted on the instrument cluster display
  • Push the left or right arrow button to select Head-Up Display Menu and push OK
  • Cycle through the menu options to turn the HUD on or off, change the brightness and height, and customize the information displayed
The Jeep HUD works with the Uconnect system and also allows you to adjust the layout so that you get the most essential information displayed on the windshield.

Is a Jeep head-up display worth it?

The Jeep head-up display isn’t included as standard equipment for a simple reason—it isn’t essential technology! However, the value it adds to owning a Jeep makes it worth paying for in the eyes of many drivers.
A HUD allows you to keep your eyes on the road, rather than be distracted by information from other screens. This gives you more time to react when a dangerous situation suddenly arises and helps reduce the risk of accidents.
The downside is that the head-up display is usually bundled into packages that include other features you may not need—automatic high-beam headlamps, for instance. While the additional features are nice to have, it also adds more to your total purchase price and insurance costs.
In the end, it’s up to you! If you’re looking for additional safety that can be provided by the HUD, then the additional cost would be worth it—especially in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, since the bundle will also give you additional safety features. However, if you’re trying to keep your ownership costs low, adding more features would do the opposite and may not be worth it.
