You can start your car remotely with Subaru’s free MySubaru app—but only if you have a Starlink Security Plus subscription.

background
Starting your car remotely using Subaru’s MySubaru app is easy. Simply open the app and tap the Quick Start button, and you’re all set. Just be aware you’ll need a subscription to use the feature.
  • Subaru’s MySubaru app allows you to remote start your vehicle from a mobile device.
  • To use remote start from the MySubaru app, you’ll need to have a Starlink Security Plus subscription.
  • New Subarus will come with a free subscription to start, but you’ll need to pay once the trial period is over.

How to start your Subaru remotely through the MySubaru app

Here’s how Subaru owners can remote start their vehicles through the MySubaru app:
  1. Download the MySubaru app: It’s available from Google Play or the Apple App Store, depending on what type of phone you use. You can also visit
    MySubaru
from any web browser. Be aware that you’ll need a Subaru Starlink subscription to use remote start features.
  2. Create a MySubaru account: You’ll need your car’s VIN number and your license plate number for this step. If you purchased your car used, you’ll need to
    contact Subaru
to prove you own the car.
  3. Tap the “Quick Start” button to start your Subaru remotely: The app will send you a notification letting you know your Subaru has been started.
You can also view your Subaru’s start settings and adjust climate presets from here. These functions allow you to set your climate controls each time you use the remote start app. For instance, you can set the temperature to 75 and automatically turn on the seat heaters to warm up your vehicle in the winter, or run the AC in the summer months.

How to turn your Subaru off remotely

Under start settings, you can adjust how long your Subaru’s engine will run before it turns itself off automatically.
If you’d like to turn the engine off remotely before that time, simply hold down the Quick Start button for a moment and choose the option to turn your car off from the menu.

Is Subaru’s remote start app free?

Subaru’s MySubaru mobile app itself is free, but it unfortunately has very limited functionality without a Starlink subscription—and remote start is disabled, too.
To get full access to your MySubaru app’s features: You’ll need a Starlink Security Plus subscription, which costs $99 per year. All new Subarus come with a three-year trial Starlink subscription with remote engine start, and six months of Security Plus, but you’ll have to pay these annual fees after this period is over.

Which vehicles have Subaru remote start?

Every Subaru vehicle with a push-button start can use the MySubaru app, so long as your Starlink subscription is active.
If your Subaru has an “old-school” physical key to start the engine with, remote start is unavailable through the app.
You can, however, get a remote start key fob for select 2015-2019 Subaru models. It can be expensive—for instance, a remote starter fob for a 2018 Impreza will set you back over $300—but they’re a decent alternative to the MySubaru app for ineligible cars, and they don’t require a subscription to use indefinitely.
You’ll want to contact your local Subaru dealership for details on getting a remote start FOB installed. The parts are sold in kits directly through Subaru. There are also aftermarket options that you can research, but the money you’ll save might not make up for potential quality issues.

More MySubaru app features

Starlink’s remote services are useful to have for reasons beyond the MySubaru app: The Starlink console above your rearview mirror puts you in emergency contact with Starlink in the event of an accident or other roadside emergency (just press the red “SOS” button).
With Starlink safety, security, and convenience features, you can also:
  • Use remote lock and unlock features buttons just below the quick start button
  • Set quick start options, including climate control settings and presets, activating seat heaters (if your Subaru has heated seats), and more
  • Use your vehicle locator, which can help with stolen vehicle recovery
  • Find Subaru service centers
  • Receive important notifications about your vehicle status
  • Schedule service appointments
  • Track past service appointments
  • Send automatic collision notifications
  • Contact Subaru’s 24-hour roadside assistance through the app
  • Book hotels and make restaurant reservations via Starlink Concierge
